Downy Woodpecker Characteristics

Picoides pubescens Appearance: Spotted black and white wings;


lengthwise white stripe on back; black and white
stripes on head
The Downy Woodpecker is found
Size: 5 ½"- 6 ½", 10" to 12" wingspan
throughout North America in woodland
Location: Typically in oak trees
environments, specifically deciduous
forests and along streams, such as near Season: Year-round
the CFTA. They mainly eat bugs,
especially beetle larvae that live inside o Native
the tree bark. Downy Woodpeckers also
love galls and the wasp larvae inside.
They often are found nesting in dead
trees or other dead plants.
