Moving from ISO/TS 16949 to IATF 16949

(Automotive Quality Management System Standard)

‘THE IATF 16949’
International Automotive Task Force (IATF) released automotive quality management system
standard ‘IATF 16949:2016’ 1st edition on 1st October 2016 which will supersede and replace
ISO/TS 16949:2009. The revised automotive quality management system standard along with ISO
9001:2015 standard and applicable customer specific requirements defines the fundamental
quality management system requirements for automotive production and relevant service parts
suppliers. IATF 16949 is not a standalone quality management system standard and must be used
in conjunction with ISO 9001:2015 and relevant customer specific requirements.
Goal of the IATF 16949 standard is the development of strong QMS that;

 Provides for continual improvements

 Emphasises defect prevention

 Includes specific requirements and tools from the automotive industry

 Promotes reduction of variation and waste throughout the supply chain.


IATF 16949:2016 follows the high level structure as per Annex SL with 10 clause structure and is
aligned to ISO 9001:2015.It represents an innovative document for automotive quality
management system

We are currently certified to ISO/TS 16949:2009
What should I do?
The IATF 16949 1st edition replaces and supersedes ISO/TS 16949the 2009 version.
For successful transition to IATF 16949, we recommend that you update your quality management
system to meet the new requirements

Every organization is different, so the steps needed to adjust your management system are likely
to be Unique to your situation. However, here are some steps that will help you get started on the
journey.

Know IATF 16949 Get acquainted yourself with the new document. While new
requirements have been added and few have been modified, some
requirements indeed remain the same.

Gap assessment Perform organizational gap assessment which need to be addressed


to meet the new requirements.

Plan Develop an implementation plan with key actions, milestones,


deadlines and responsibilities.

Awareness Provide appropriate training and awareness including internal auditor


training and second party auditor training to the relevant personnel.

Documentation Update your existing quality management system to meet the revised
requirements. IATF 16949:2016 now requires ‘documented process’
for many of the additional requirements.

IATF 16949
Certification to IATF 16949 certificate is issued by Bureau Veritas after successful
completion of transition audit (Audit, NC Management, Certification
IATF 16949 decision). A new audit cycle starts with transition audit.
What is the timeframe for transition audit
to IATF 16949?
 Transition audit will happen during next ‘regular scheduled audit’ in 2017 or 2018 and
replaces the next regular (surveillance/recertification) audit.
 Transition audit can start as early as January 2017. No audit as per ISO/TS 16949: 2009 is
allowed after 1st October 2017.
 Last possible date for successful transition to IATF 16949:2016 is 14th September 2018.
 Manufacturing sites and remote location are required to transition to IATF 16949:2016
through transition audit.
 Duration of Transition audit will be as per recertification audit man days. Additional time
for document review is required.
 Avoid risk of transition audit very close to current certificate expiry date
 Depending on the next regular audit date, there can be 1 or 2 options for transition.
