Tony Tan Caktiong

Family background

 Tony Tan Caktiong was born on January 5, 1953 in a family of Chinese immigrants,
originally from Fujian and he is a Filipino entrepreneur. He is the founder and chairman
of Jollibee Foods Corporation and the co-chairman of Double Dragon Properties. Grace
Tan Caktiong is his spouse, William Tan Untiong and Joseph Tanbuntiong is his brother,
Carl Tancaktiong is his son and Virgie Tan Chua is his sister.

Education

 Tony Tan Caktiong attended high school at Chiang Kai Shek College and graduated from
the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in chemical engineering.

Why they went into business?

 Tony Tan Caktiong was a Filipino Chinese entrepreneur who set up a two-outlet ice
cream parlor business in the city of Manila. It was 1975 when he began his business. His
father used to operate a kitchen in Fujian, China, which was where Tony’s association
with the food services business began. Even though his ice cream parlor business was
doing well, Tony wanted to expand in the foods business – in the form of a fast-food
outlet chain. He was inspired by the global popularity of companies like McDonald’s
which was planning to enter the Philippines during that time, but Wendy’s and Burger
King already had a presence in the Philippines.

Is the business successful?

 Yes, because Jollibee has spread to other countries, many people are eating in Jollibee
and because of their low budget meal Jollibee gets our attention to buy and save money.
The proof of success is Jollibee spread to other countries and Jollibee succeed in
business.
Values

 The values shown in the business that inspires us the most is Speed with Excellence in
these values it shows planning, deciding and acting quickly, setting challenging goals and
executing well and constantly find ways to improve and innovate.
 As a student we can apply these values by also setting challenging goals that motivates us
to value in achieving them and executing them very well and finding ways to improve in
the things that we can achieve or produce something better.
