Selda Inosente by Kara David: A Review

Background

Kara David is a Filipino journalist, host and news anchor. She is the founder
and president of Project Malasakit, a foundation that helps those people whom
she featured in documentary. Selda Inosente, documentary by Kara David was
published on 2003, it tells the story of Filipina detainees with their child inside
the prison. She won UNICEF Childs Rights Award

Summary

Kara witnessed the situation of Merly and Aida inside the jail together with their
babies. Aida's husband named Feliciano is also detained with the case of drug
dealing. Feliciano wanted a favor from Ms. Kara, he gave a letter to be delivered
with his uncle Yoyong requesting an adoption for his child Patrick. However, in
Manila City Jail with a total of five hundred and more detainees. The prison
contains seventy detainees, there are fourteen pregnant and two children but
the prison is only suitable for twenty people. Kara found a one-year old
Pachuchay, this child never experienced freedom and the environment she has
were prisoners with different personalities, a crowded place. Kara interviewed
Irene from Kanlaon Municipal Jail, Irene is a suspect, a former NPA not knowing
her crime and no court hearing have happened. She has a child named Criselda,
two-years of age. Irene sometimes think and regretted what she have been
through, with the help of Task Force Detainees of the Philippines, Criselda will
soon go to school. Kara found Yoyong, uncle of Feliciano who will supposed to
be the new father of baby Patrick. While interviewing, Yoyong refused to adopt
the child because he do not want to be involved with Feliciano's life.

@kclumbo

“Heartbreaking, disturbing i-witness selda inosente by kara david on GMA News

tv now. I wonder where those kids are now?”

My review for Selda Inosente by Kara David

The documentary episode of i-witness Selda Inosente by Kara David presents the
story of a woman detainees who gave birth inside the prison. Ms. Kara faced
several women prisoners and she have seen and experienced how hard it is to
be inside the jail what more when someone is pregnant. Among all her
documentaries, it is noticeable that it is always about children as her subject
and in a blog where Ms. Kara said that children are the hardest to interview but
when they talk, you know that it is true children are also prone for poverty and
the weakest in society.

In her documentary, this is challenging because someone have to experience

being with real detainees and not having an idea what is going on with their mind
because somehow that is one of the impression about prisoners yet Kara was
able to interact with them, she even ate with them. From the beginning of the
episode, the theme was agreed with the weather that time and how Kara
manipulated the situation to create the feelings as one of the phrase she uttered
which is the children crying with the rain. She encountered different
personalities inside the jail and this is a great factor for developing child’s
personality as well and it is not good. The part in the documentary where Kara
delivered the letter to Yoyong creates a feeling between the motherly love or
sacrifice unfortunately Yoyong refused to adopt the baby for some reason. Along
the way, there was a child named Criselda who was supported to study. However,
there are still hope and dreams the mothers want for their child but it is hard
for them to sacrifice their rights as a mother. This was a great representation of
today’s society and thus gives lessons to people who have watched it.

Lesson

In life, there are things which is bound to happen and some are in depends on
our hands. Before doing things that might destroy our life, think first of the
consequences and include those who will be affected by our decisions. Although
there are people who is unfortunate enough to do immoral things for the sake of
living not knowing how it will compensate someone. It is a fight between how to
be parent and how to survive. However, there are many ways to survive, it is a
choice and the regret is always at the end.

Application

As a person, I choose to suffer in pain for my dreams they say slowly but surely
rather than being impulsive caused by the desires not conscious about the
consequences. On the other hand, I have some realizations the physical prison
is the same with being imprisoned by someone. I know how it feels to be
imprisoned, not able to fly my way and be happy with other environment. It is
hard because I envied a lot of people being free while myself, I just dream that
someday my mother wake by my feelings and know that I need to stand by myself
to be aware and experience things outside my comfort zone I do not want to be
an innocent prison. However, those people and children inside the jail although
it is still far but one must be hopeful and take life as a lesson. Same with myself,
I will not make someone to be imprisoned by my selfish decisions.

What makes the Harry Potter Series relatable even though it is a fantasy novel?

Fantasy as perceived is something imaginary or fictitious. In the case of Harry

Potter Series, why it happened to be relatable?. Relatable means, being able to
relate to something or to reflect a connection. However, in this sense, do people
have to think about superpowers or immortal powers as part of their fantasy or
something they are related?

Harry Potter Series is prominent, marketed and sold of almost billions of books
which the consumers are not only children or youth but also adults. There are
also films and musicals inspired by Harry Potter Series, and J.K Rowling was
the first author who achieved billions.

There is something, not typical characteristics of fantasy novel (Harry Potter

Series) has and that’s what makes it continuously popular. Knowing that it is
fantasy, the author conveys some realistic parts like the struggles and feelings.
According to the instructional material, a fantasy protagonist lacks of heroic
abilities (e.g. not to feel hurt or numb), there is the fear and failure to do task.
This what it makes the Harry Potter Series relatable to audiences, the realistic
feelings and occurrences in life conveyed with the novel. There is the theme of
choices, the pattern between good and evil that presented moral in life. This
novel consists of both realistic and fantasy elements that makes the audiences
relatable and entertained.

What makes romantic love the most widely used genre?

When it comes to genre, most of the people refer love. Have you ever noticed in
a bookstore and the most featured books are about love? Why is that?

This is man’s nature to look for love, to be in a relationship, to feel the sensation
right before you finish peeing, the butterflies inside. This is wonderful thing.
People read romantic books because it gives them the fantasy, the chill in
feelings, some of people’s love language are copied based on what they have read
or watched and thus imagining it to happen in real life.

Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with the Wind" is a romance novel. Upon
thinking about romance, the prior idea would be about two person fell in love or
fight for love and then have a happily ever after. This novel have something to
serve you on the table. It’s not just about romance, it is also historical since it
reflects the American civil war that time. The main female character Scarlet used
to be a manipulative person who took men for her benefits and determined to do
everything to succeed, this is somehow not a typical representation of a woman
in romance novel which is a female who is weak or in need of a man’s protection.
Scarlett, standing still despite of the tragedies she have encountered and Rhett
too as being strike by the war, happened to hold for the hope of love with Scarlett.
The novel thus reflects the environment of that period when the war occured,
people was reflected by that novel, they relate with the harships as being
portrayed in the novel. However, in near last part of the movie I have watched,
there’s this awakening feelings. The love was activated by someone Scarlett
unexpectedly to feel. Unfortunately, it’s gone by the fact that Rhett's feelings for
Scarlett suddenly faded.

The information or the ideas was based on the movie “Gone with the Wind” 1936.

Escaped Me

It is a beautiful day as the sun rises in the morning, I am lying on my back on

the pallet. I listen to the words I hear while my eyes are closed. The sun rays
touched my face, I felt the warm and embracing it. Around minutes of
savouring the morning, I tried to forget where I am, I imagine myself to a place
better than in this pallet. I tried to imagine better things and I wasted thirty
minutes for that. I am not ready to open my eyes again and face scenes that I
wish were never been my life. I forced to come back to the reality of my life. I
tried to think of word today however I think of to die.

I do not understand what is happening to my mind. Some said, “do not

diagnose yourself,” but what could I do I lose interest. Even if I am still a child
back then, have been raised with an environment filled with negativities, it was
like an affliction started in younger age. Mother and father always fighting, I
often discouraged as she always yelled at me. I think of myself as a baby
covered with black blanket instead of a white and soft one. It was and still
choking me. Yet who knows if I am, people see me smiling, laughing and
making jokes I have already wear this mask.

Afternoon, while I was in our room I heard her yelling bringing out the past
failures that I have been to. Including the fact that I bring no luck, I am a
burden without income to serve, it was only my brother who work. I was
pressured every day my mind goes beyond what I need to do and between the
overloading activities and thesis we have. I was insulted been never respect by
the way she labelled me not as a daughter anymore. This was abusive I
thought, I am disrespectful when I tell this. I wish to stay home usually instead
of socializing because if I do that, she will tell me I am happy-go-lucky. I wish I
were. Things gets harder for me, messages and notifications seems to make me
shaky. I was down and thus been realized when will I escape.
The love gave to a daughter I look for. The understanding and positive words I
am longing. Things get worse, I forced to read messages for grades concern yet
call and text messages all unanswered. I wish again, not for today but to die, to
escape myself from this affliction I had. But, the future I still think and I am
content to be someone who does not open my door and waiting again. There
came a doctor but I refused to consult. I cried and dream how would it feel to
be someone with a brighter life and family, I crave for real love and
understanding. The life where you could wake up in the morning without being
captured by the depressing thoughts. The day where you can be yourself and
happy. I envied that freedom and peace.

Some Filipinos around Philippines continuously consuming Skinless

Longganisa and other processed meat amidst pandemic

They consider processed frozen food like skinless longganisa as an alternative

due to increasing prices of pork which is 380 to 400 pesos (Rafales, 2021). The
SINAG group said that the threat of African Swine Fever affected 70 % of pork
supply in Luzon that makes them purchased from Mindanao or Visayas
resulting to a higher price due to its demand.

According to Department of Science of Technology, this indicates the

consumption of skinless longganisa increases. Too much or long period of time
eating it impose health risk because of its nitrate as the main ingredient to
preserve products like tocino and longganisa. It may result to weakness, vision
impairment, fatigue and difficulty breathing and speaking. World Health
Organization said that processed meat is a major contributor of cancer or
cardiovascular disease thus eating 50 grams of processed meat increases the
risk of prostate cancer and other fatal diseases.

Settling for a cheap but delicious food is like choosing what destroys you later.
Investing on healthy foods and discipline is kind of hard, risking your health
for the sake of cheapness and savings is also hard. What hard would you
choose?

A story that has different interpretations

Whenever I go for a walk I always bring my black sling bag with pocket notebook and a ballpen inside
because I love to write things that my eyes take a look at. From our house to Walter Mart, I have to ride
a bus and while I am sitting next to a woman who drinks coffee, I stared from the aroma and the way
she sips her coffee. I lean my head in the glass window while I imagine a room with a dim light at night,
embracing the essentials I bought for myself- facial stuffs, a lot of foods, groceries, flushies and moon
lamp. I wrote all of this to my notebook.
"Walter Mart, Walter Mart," the conductor shouted. I was relieved knowing I escape with the air
conditioner of the bus, the smell makes me vomit well I have no choice. I stop by and crosswalk, the
vehicles are too fast. Now, I show my bag to the guard and as I entered, the happiness I imagined was
like a child who is full of excitements that reflects the glitters in his eyes. I am a 21-year old woman. I go
for a walk but not buying anything, there was no corner left with my patient, strong resistant feet. I
escape for a while when as I encountered a lot of people and they were happy that moment. A group of
families, singular ones, friends and a couple walking around the mall, chatting to each other. This is the
time I get my notebook and sketch those people and compare it with worms going out of their home
when it's raining. Weird I was.
"That's funny, you are crazy Shannen," I talk to myself thinking how I have ever think that comparison.
But what comes into my mind, are these people getting mad when the salted-life got them just like a
worm being destroyed by salt. Nevermind, the clouds are dark, lucky that I brought an umbrella. I need
to go home, again. This time I ride a jeepney which is better than any air conditioning vehicle because
the fresh air is better for me.
I went home exactly at five pm and it was good. I love this time of the day, night hours. I am sick of
staying the whole day inside the house not because I am outgoing but I have to. The alone time, peace
and happiness are my companion and I never achieve it inside our house. Unfortunately, the pandemic
agrees with all the the things I hate and it slowly draining me into pieces. “Good night," I thought while I
fell asleep and laughing.

Foreign Language: A Dynamic Skill !

"A different language is a different vision of life." - Federico Fellini

We study foreign language to be able for us to have an effective communication and so to connect with
others. It is an essential skill which we can acquire through interaction with others as well as by
educating ourselves; also, by applying it in real life. Having this language, you can have the power such
as when you are able to comprehend what someone is saying then what comes into your mind is the
process of recalling the vocabulary and grammar then you will use that input to create a meaningful
context and you will give the feedback. And as a learner of the language itself, making it a habit can
caused a long-term impact. Here are some reasons why learning a foreign language is important as what
Dick (2020) mentioned: Travel becomes easy especially when you're going abroad, learning the foreign
language can gives you more opportunity, widening your friendship, acquiring open-mindedness and
understanding of other's cultural differences. Writing and speaking the foreign language got a lot of
advantages. You can impress other people or showcase what you already know, teach others to be
fluent in the language and of course the career opportunities that awaits you both in the job and
different destination.
