SHORT FILM AS A FORM OF LITERATURE

OBJECTIVES
• Differentiate short film from feature film;
• Share ideas and insights about the meaning and significance of a short film; and
• Discuss larger issues and bigger meanings in a short film.

FOCUS: KIWI
A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. No consensus exists
as to where that boundary is drawn, although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less,
including all credits".
Kiwi is a short film that is about a flightless bird that did everything just to experience what
other birds are capable of – flying. Kiwi cut the trees and nailed every single one at the side of
the cliff. After all trees have been nailed, Kiwi jumped off the cliff with its wings open and a tear.

ACTIVITY : ANALYZING SHORT FILM

Watch the short film, "Kiwi", and share your ideas about it by giving answers to any of the
following questions.
1. What happened to Kiwi at the end? (50-100 words)
− What happened to Kiwi in the end is not shown in the video. But I'm assured
that he felt proud of himself for pursuing his dream of flying like those birds out
there. Whether he succeeds or not, the important thing is that he takes the risk
worth taking. And I believe in a saying, "Some risks are worth taking, even if it
means losing a life."

2. Where did it go? (50-100 words)

− In my understanding of the short film, Kiwi cut the trees and nailed every single
one to the side of the cliff. And I think that the purpose of the tree is to provide a
place where the Kiwi will land so that when he falls on the leaves and branches
of the tree, the damage is not too severe.

3. Did it die or survive? (50-100 words)

− I think Kiwi survived after he took the risk. I believe that each of us knows what
the best ways are to become safe after taking some risky tasks. And I believe that
Kiwi did that to the tree because he knew that he would survive when he landed
on the tree. He will surely survive, but he will probably get some severe or mild
injuries.
4. What does the film tell about ambitions and dreams? (50-100 words)
− Each of us has different ambitions and dreams. Just like kiwi, as a flightless bird,
his dream is to experience flying like other birds who know how to fly. Pursuing
dreams needs courage and determination. The film teaches us that we should
pursue our dreams and ambitions, no matter how difficult they are to achieve.
Don't miss out on something that could be great just because it could also be
difficult.

5. If you were Kiwi, would you do the same? Would you risk everything to chase a dream?
(50-100 words)
− Without a doubt. Why would I not take the risk if I knew it would be
worthwhile? I will surely chase my dreams in life because if I achieve my
ambitions and dreams, they will lead me and my family to a better life. The hard
work that I am doing now is for my dreams. Sacrificing my health for the online
class is one of the risks that I am taking right now. Sometimes you have to take a
risk because the reward is worth it. It's better to fail than to regret the chances
we didn't take.
