In the dialogue 1, Elo and Kikan are talking about an English speech contest. To get
Kikan’s attention in the beginning, Elo says, “I have hot news for you”. It is important to
know, how to get and give someone’s attention, in a daily conversation. The same way like
“Hello, class!” in the dialogue 2 and “Attention please” in the dialogue 3 also have the same
function. They are used to get one’s intention.
The other expressions of getting one’s attention are:
- Hey, guys.
- Surprise!
- Guess what!
- Attention, please.
- Hello, excuse me.
- Listen, everybody.
- Have you heard that ...?
- You have to listen this!
- I have a great story for you.
- I’ve got something to tell you.

melihat ke arah yang ditunjukkannya, dimana buku yang hilang tergeletak di atas kursi.
Dengan demikian Andri dapat menemukan kembali bukunya yang hilang.

Sarah’s hair, she appreciates it by saying “Your hair is beautiful. It’s long, dark and healthy. I
really want to have hair like yours.”.
The expression like, “It looks fabulous. The feature is modern too.” in the dialogue 2 has
the same function too. It is also used to appreciate someone’s. In this case, Andri is giving
compliment to the new Dwi’s Ipad.

There are some expressions, you’ve found in the italicized sentences in the dialogue
above. For example, in dialogue 1, Siti is interviewing Mrs. Wati about her job as a botanist.
When Siti wants to know Mrs. Wati thinks about her job, she says “What do you think about
your job?”. As a response, Mrs. Wati answers “I think my job is interesting.” The expression
tells what she thinks about her own job.
Another expression in dialogue 2, both “What about this pink dress?” and “What do you
think?” also have the same function, to ask what one’s thinks of something. When Tiwi says
“I think the color is too bright.” it means that She tells her view about the dress which is
chosen by Nuh.
The italicized sentences in the dialogue above are known as asking for and giving opinion
expressions. We use these expressions to tell what people think about something. Here are the
expressions of asking for and giving opinion.
