TESTING PROCEDURE FOR CABLE HI-POT TEST

GENERAL
1. Record all particulars of the cable to be tested.
2. Ensure that both ends of the cable to be tested are properly prepared and ready for testing.
3. Station one person at the remote end to ensure that the exposed ends of the cable are cordoned off
and to keep area clear of people.

A) INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST

1. Take the insulation resistance reading between phase & earth and phase to phase using a 5000V
meggar test set.

B) PRESSURE TEST
1. Connect the voltage output of the D.C. high voltage test set to R (red) phase of the cable.
2. Ensure that the control knob of the high voltage test set is at zero position. Switch on high voltage
test set.

CAUTION: Due to the pressure of lethal high voltages, ensure that the area around the
cable under test is cordon off and appropriate danger signs put up.

3. Slowly increase the voltage inject up to the required level as shown in the table below and
maintain the voltage for 15 minutes. Note and record the leakage current. Then slowly reduce the
voltage back to zero.
Cable Rated Voltage Test Voltage/Duration
6.6KV 15.0KVDC/15mins.
11.0KV 25.0KVDC/15mins.
33.0KV 75.0KVDC/15mins.

4. Discharge the cable with a high voltage discharge rod. Ensure that the cable is fully discharged
before disconnecting the cables.
5. Repeat above tests for Y (yellow) and B (blue) phase.
6. Check and ensure that all wires are removed.

C) INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST (AFTER HI-POT)

1. Repeat IR test as in Section A above.
