GLOBAL CITY- is a city which is a primary node in the global economic
network.

-The concept comes from geography and urban studies and idea that
globalization is created,facilated,and enacted in strategic geographic locales according
to a hierarchy of importance to the operation of the global system of finance and trade.

Why study global cities?


● Global cities are interconnected,embdded as they are in global production
and financial networks,they are also locked into competition with one another
to command increasing resources and to attract capital.To successfully
complete,local governments have been keen to promote their cities as
GLOBAL.
Globalization is spatial
● Because it occurs in physical spaces.
● Because what makes it move is the fact that it is based in places.

Year 1950- 30% of the world lived in urban areas


● Year 2014- that number increased to 54%
by year 2050 it is expected to reach 66%.

● DEFINING THE GLOBAL CITY


SASKIA SASSEN-is a dutch-american sociologist noted for her
analyses of globalization and international human migration.
● She popularized the term ''global city'' in 1990's.

● All of which are hubs of global finance and capitalism.They are homes for
instance of the worlds top stock exchanges where investors buy and sell
shares inmajor corporation.

● LONDON- Financial Times Stock Exchange(FTSE)
● TOKYO-Nikkie
Los Angeles-->can now rival the Bif Apple's cultural influence.
San Francisco-->must now factor in as another global city,because it is home
of the most powerful internet companies-''facrbook,Twitter and Google.
The growth of Chines economy has turn cities (Shanghai,Beijing and
Guangzhou)into centers of trade and finance.
Shainghai Stock Exchange-reopened in 1990's
(it become the fifth largest stock market in the world)
.Australia-->Sydney commands the greatest proportion of capital.
● Melbourne-->is described as sydney's rival''global city'' because many
magazines and lists have now reffered to it as the worlds' ''most livable city''
-a place with good public transportation,a thriving cultural scene and a
relatively easy pace of life.
INDICATORS FOR GLOBALITY
The foremost characteristic is economic power.
