Personal Statement 2
“Deforestation”
Various world studies say that Indonesia is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the
world. In 2012, Indonesia was recorded as producing carbon emissions in the world of 1.98 billion
tons of CO2 each year. It was reported that the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in
Indonesia is not from industry but from the consequences of deforestation and forest degradation.
Deforestation is a situation of forest cover loss and its attributes which causes loss of structure and
function of the forest (changes in forested areas become not forested due to human activities). This
deforestation has become the world's attention. The increase in greenhouse gases causes extreme
climate change. In the period 2009-2013, Indonesia's forests recorded a loss of 1.13 million
hectares annually. The speed of loss of Indonesian forests is equivalent to 3 times the area of a
soccer field / minute. This climate change greatly affects developments in other sectors such as
agriculture, animal husbandry, marine affairs, the environment and industry and the economy. So
that it cannot be denied in the future trees will be considered rare, seeing the current conditions
that have been met by development, cutting down trees for the textile and tooling industry while
on the other side of the tree takes decades to function optimally. As a nation generation young
man, the contribution I can make is to apply the science of biotechnology in the multiplication of
tree plants to grow fast and live long, requiring further research and collaboration between parties.
In addition, I want to invite Indonesian youth to discuss efforts to overcome the problem of
deforestation in Indonesia. Efforts can be made with the youth, namely the propagation of tree
seeds practically shrouded in compost so that it is easy to grow if it is in contact with water and
can last long in conditions covered by compost. Seeds can be spread in the form of sachets to the
community. So that wherever people go, they can bring this tree seed sachet and spread it on the
journey as an attempt to reforest. Cargill Global Scholar can support my efforts both in training
and finance, and improve relations to work with youth at the international level to discuss the
problem of deforestation.
