GROUP HOUSING WITH TERRACE GARDENS

INTRODUCTION
A terrace is an external, raised, open, flat area in either a landscape (such as a park or garden)
near a building, or as a roof terrace on a flat roof.
Terraces need not always protrude from a building; a flat roof area (which may or may not be
surrounded by a balustrade) used for social activity is also known as a terrace. In Venice, Italy,
for example, the rooftop terrace is the most common form of terrace found. Developed around
1500 CE.
Terrace housing refers to providing terraces for dwelling units of housing/apartments which
would provide them a feeling of openness and an open space to carry out various activities. A
well-designed roof terrace makes great use of extra space and offers a secluded refuge, high
above the city below. It has its own microclimate and special consideration of sun, shade, wind
and exposure is required. Special rooftop terraces are a highlight in every city, because they
offer a unique view of the sights and the hustle and bustle on the streets. Furnished with lounge
or garden furniture, individual decorations, potted plants, sun sails and shades.

ROOF GARDENS IN HOUSING

A green roof has a dual function: it is a roof system designed to promote the growth of various
forms of vegetation on the top of buildings. It is also designed to support various forms of
renewable energy and water collection technology to assist in supply of power water to the
occupant of the building. Although green roofs are only one element of a building, it is extremely
important when considering the long-term sustainability of our building and their impact on the
environment. Professionals, however, draw a distinction between the two types; roof gardens
are installed for the access and enjoyment of people. They are also costly to build, require
intensive maintenance and are heavy in weight due to the deep soil profiles. In contrast, green
roofs are lightweight with thin soil profiles and minimal maintenance requirements. They are
cheaper to construct as they are installed for environmental performance and visual
improvement only. The origin of green roofs can be traced back to the vernacular architecture of
various regions, while roof gardens have been documented as being built by the affluent class
since Ancient times. Both green roofs and roof gardens have influenced the modern day green
roofing system

AIM
 Strategies to construct green roofs and terraces on each dwelling unit.
 Increased habitat for birds, butterflies and insects; and Reduced heating and
cooling costs by providing a layer of insulation on buildings.
OBJECTIVE
In most of the Cities, where open space is a matter of scarce, leaving no scope for planting or
landscaping, yet need to be developed to improve its environment and air quality. This is
possible only through Vertical or lateral gardens, which need very less space and can improve
the air quality, the quality of environment and maintain a balance in the oxygen levels. Mainly in
compact areas liking housing units , one could feel the space and live in a rich environment.

GREEN ROOF SYSTEM COMPONENTS

Green roofs consist of both horticultural elements and traditional roofing components. There are
three distinct layers in a green roof from the bottom – elements that provide structural integrity;
an engineered growing medium (which may or may not include soil) and the plant canopy
(components selected as per particular application). Figure illustrates the various components in
a green roof system.
