1
Converting Numbers To Words And Words To Numbers.

In our everyday lifes we come across written numbers, in the newspapers, on bank
cheques and in legal documents, so it is important to be able to read and understand
them. In the previous exercises 1, 2 and 3 we have dealt with just the numbers, in this
exercise, we will deal with converting numbers into written words.

The first thing that you need to know is how to spell the various numbers so use the
chart below:

0 Nought or 10 Ten 20 Twenty

Zero
1 One 11 Eleven 30 Thirty
2 Two 12 Twelve 40 Forty
3 Three 13 Thirteen 50 Fifty
4 Four 14 Fourteen 60 Sixty
5 Five 15 Fifteen 70 Seventy
6 Six 16 Sixteen 80 Eighty
7 Seven 17 Seventeen 90 Ninety
8 Eight 18 Eighteen 100 Hundred
9 Nine 19 Nineteen 1000 Thousand
1, 000, 000 Million 1, 000, 000, 000 Billion

A billion used to be within the British Isles, a million million (1, 000, 000, 000, 000),
now it is the same as America and France, which is a thousand million (1, 000, 000,
000)

So if you are reading a British book, newspaper or article, that is old and it states a
billion, it means the old billion which is a million million.

Tips:
Cut out the above table and glue it on to a blank postcard and keep
as a handy reference.

When writing numbers such as twenty five, put a hyphen between

the twenty and five like this twenty-five.
Don’t forget for 15 and 50 the V in the word changes to an F.
