Final Exam

Tutorial: The tutorial classes for each section will be conducted by the Teaching assistants (TA). We have
three TAs for the three sections. The weekly quiz will be conducted during each of the tutorial classes.
Following is the schedule for Tutorial classes.

Section Name of The TA Time Class room

Fx1 (510719001-40) Sudipta Chakrabarty Tuesday 11:45 a.m.-12:40 p.m U 513
Fx2 (510719041-80) Arkabrata Gupta Tuesday 11:45 a.m.-12:40 p.m U 802
Gx (510519001-47) Shayari Basu Tuesday 11:45 a.m.-12:40 p.m U 613
Gy (510519048-105) Binoy Krishna Ghosh Tuesday 11:45 a.m.-12:40 p.m U 702

Problem set for each week will be sent to you. If you find difficulty in solving the problems you can
consult during the tutorial classes or you can avail the office hours of the respective teachers.

Grading

Grades on this course will be based on your scores in the continuous internal assessments and a
comprehensive final exam. Internal assessment comprises of weekly quiz, class tests, midterm
examination and your regularity in attending the classes. The distribution of marks is as following

Weekly quiz 05%

Class Test 10%
Attendance 05%
Midterm exam: 30 %
Final exam: 50 %

Class test
There will be at least four class tests conducted by the teacher. It may be a surprise test. These tests will
be conducted during regular classes.

Midterm Exam
This is a centrally conducted examination normally conducted at the middle of the semester. This time the
mid term exam is scheduled between September 16 – September 21, 2019. Please refer to the
academic calendar for midterm exam schedule. Full mark for this exam is 50 and time allotted is two
hours. Units 1, 3 and 5 will be covered. There will be three questions each carrying 15 marks along with
some short questions (5 marks in total) covering the above units. You have to answer all questions to get
100% credit.

5
Final Exam

Final exam is also a centrally conducted exam held at the end of the semester. Please refer to the academic
calendar for final exam schedule. Full mark for this exam is 100 and time allotted is three hours. All the
units will be covered in this exam.

Exam Schedule

The TAs will take regular weekly tests during the tutorial classes. Class test schedule will be announced by
the teacher. These tests may or may not be open book type depending upon the teacher’s choice. Note that
the teacher can take surprise test also without any prior notification. Schedule for midterm and final
examination has been announced centrally by the institute authority. You can find it in the academic
calendar published on the website of the institute.

Assessment Policy

Question papers will consist of problems/derivations similar to the worked out example problems in the
class, text book and the practice materials. Exams will be closed book. You should bring with you a pocket
calculator to work out the answers to numerical problems.

Full credit on exams will be awarded for complete solutions including drawing a figure and deriving
necessary formulas, if appropriate, and for numerically accurate answers with appropriate units and
significant figures. Partial credit may be given for correct derivations if the answer is numerically wrong
due to arithmetic errors. No credit will be given for equations written down at random or for numerical
answers that are not supported by a reasonably complete derivation (except mention explicitly). The best
way to prepare for the exams is to study the fundamental principles of the concerned topics along with the
example problems and to work out the problems given in the problem set in a regular basis. You should
work as many additional problems from the text books as you can. This is the best way to ensure your
understanding of the subject.

Re-grading

For all the examinations covering class tests, midterm and end semester examination, graded answer
booklet will be accessible to you. The answer script will be shown to you by the teachers of this course
after checking your answer script at a convenient date and time before publishing the result. You can place
your re-grade request during this time. None will be entertained after the schedule date and time.

Academic Integrity

Students are responsible for abiding by the academic integrity policies of the Institute. Academic
dishonesty will be prosecuted to the fullest extent.

Class Decorum: The main rule for the class is consideration to your fellow students. No disruptive
behavior will be tolerated. Texting or phone calls are not allowed. Laptops are not allowed unless specified
by the teacher.
