MOOC Reflection
INTEGRATING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS INTO THE
EXPLORATION OF CULTURE IN AN EFL SETTING

Reflection Guide Questions:

1. Summarize the key concepts that you have learned from this week’s module.
2. What was the most useful learning? Explain.
3. How do you plan to use or apply this learning in your class, life or profession?
4. What challenges did you encounter while MOOCing this week, and how did you deal with them?

WEEK 1: ORIENTATION AND CULTURE

Module 1 taught me about the 3P’s of culture. First, is perspective which was described by Jollard Frank
as what members of a culture think, feel and value. Second, is practice which includes typical behaviors and
traditions in a civilization. Lastly was product, it includes clothing, music and literature of a certain civilization.
This module also taught me about the intercultural encounters such as cultural meaning being symbolic, high-
context and low-context cultures, monochronic cultures and polychronic cultures. I too learned about the
differences between collectivism and individualism wherein collectivist society - the strongest identity is the
group you belong to, while in an individualist society, to attain personal gain you are willing to sacrifice
personal relationships. This made me ponder on what kind of major cultural difference I belong to, because of
that I’ve learned to appreciate and improve myself more for my students and the people who believes in me. I
am pleased because I was able to explore not only my culture, but other culture as well.

WEEK 2: CRITICAL THINKING

Module 2 impacts on me as a teacher, because to be an effective teacher, you must demonstrate critical
thinking amongst students. In same manner, I came to know about micro-cultures which are sub-culture which
exist within the larger culture.
I made a wheel diagram which helped me understand the essence of my existence, the different roles I
play and various activities I have as a human being. At one time a person realizes his worth, he would also
realize the value of the people around him. Also, I have known my substance as an educator, I would also know
the significance of my students. Hence, teaching them to think critically is a must, their way of thinking will not
be influenced by their opinions.

WEEK 3: ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS

Module 3 acquainted me with different exercises which could be given to understudies in instructing
society. As per Jerrold Frank, instructors must investigate these measurements in showing society: the self as
social, the components of culture, intercultural marvels (culture general learning), specific societies (culture-
explicit learning) and obtaining systems for culture learning. These measurements will help improve the
1
"intercultural informative fitness" (Bryam 1997) Though we are as of now natural in utilizing rubric in the
Kto12 instructive framework here in the Philippines, I was progressively illuminated in the dialog exhibited
about this subject. This would truly enable me to make an increasingly exact and dependable non-numerical
appraisal.

WEEK 4: INTERPRETATION, REFLECTION AND BEGINNING LESSON PLANNING

Module 4centered on the variations between description and interpretation. generally it's extremely
troublesome to differentiate if an image or plan is simply an outline or interpretation however with the vivid and
less complicated examples given within the discussion I simply get wise. this can be an enormous facilitate for
us lecturers in describing or deciphering students’ behavior and values within the four corners of the
schoolroom. This module additionally tutored ME regarding the depth of reflection rubric to investigate about
the kind of reflective thought I actually have, its characteristics, its example and the way might I any enhance
myself as an instructor.

WEEK 5: APPLYING IT LOGICALLY

Module five dealt on the way of lesson designing wherever the mandatory components are: objectives,
timing, sequencing, differentiation, assessment and materials. If somebody incorporates a attempt to teach
culture he/she should concentrate on the specific-teaching goals set for its kind. I, a lot of significantly, knowing
of these, create it easier on behalf of me to adopt to changes that may occur inside myself as a lecturer and that
I, as a cultural being.
Thank you, MOOC, for discovering the marvelous culture hidden in me.
