Case studies:
Before getting started few questions strike my mind!

WHY a housing project?

WHY do we need a neighbourhood housing?

You don’t to be a student of architecture to understand that why

Kashmir known as “Heaven on earth” is has majestic landscape
features, great historic background of Persians and Mughals. The city
started developing around the rivers which had an immense support
offered by river like water for daily usage, transport system, its Ghats
also acted as the platform of leisure and delight.
But as the time passed population increased, people stated moving
out to other part of the city, law started taking shape so started the
city. Area started to develop and in Srinagar areas like Sanat Nagar,
Bemina, Karan Nagar were planned by SDA (Srinagar development
Authority) unlike the rest of the city which developed of its own,
which had no concept of infrastructure and quality of living, which
gives you a sense that the city is infected by certain virus and need
an immediate diagnosis. But it has been three decades now there
has not been a properly designed neighbourhood.
It can be summed by that the city is like a fabric which should be
knitted together with a fine piece of thread so that the product is a
fine piece of garment which can function properly.
So I came up with this proposed project where we can create an
example of how a Neighbourhood housing can create an important
impact on the Urban fabric of a city, where there is proper
densification of grain, quality of life is maintained without
compromising the infrastructure and basic amenities of recreation
and health facilities.
The site is located in Zakura, Srinagar which has been declared as
Housing and Human Habitat in Master plan 2035 of Srinagar,
Development regulation of other than public & semi-public use i.e
non-government use (Master plan 2035). It also has a potential for
horticulture activities which is seen a major activity of Kashmiri
people that they enjoy to spend time with gardening and In the
Revised Master Plan of Greater Srinagar, a Kitchen garden Scheme is
also proposed which shall include planting of fruit trees of different
varieties in kitchen gardens. Under this Scheme, a kit of 10 plants
with Vermi-compost (10 kg) is proposed to be distributed to 1500
beneficiaries each year residing in urban areas.
Zakura has also been taken considered to have mini-CBD
(Commercial Business District).
In totality by evaluating all the parameters I came up with this site.

1. Developing the Master Plan.

2. Residences (plotted, row housing / villas, flatted development).
3. Mini-cbd / bazaar and commercial complex.
4. Recreational zones.
5. Socio-Cultural facilities.
6. Educational Facilities.
7. Health Facilities.
8. Infrastructure.
To create a role model for upcoming projects that will help in
formulating the urban fabric of Srinagar.

1. To improve and enhance the quality of living and providing

basic amenities in neighbourhood.
2. To create a meaningful urban fabric that is developed orderly.
3. To recreate the lost image of traditional architecture of
Kashmir with modern day technology.

1. Master planning of neighbourhood.

2. Designing of residences and detailing in terms of construction
techniques.
3. Landscaping policies.

1. Since the region fall in cold climate it is not possible to create a

housing that can stop a user to drive into the neighbourhood
and thus creating a zero carbon emission housing.
2. Very less scope of using renewable energies like wind and solar.
3. Due to the region falls in seismic zone V, there is very less
scope of going a high rise is very limited, generally allowed 30-
40fts height.
