Tutorial 3 – Electrical Installation Design

1. Determine the percentage voltage drop along a 400V, 3-phase feeder, 100 ft in length,
consisting of three 500 kcmil THW copper conductor in parallel per phase. The load
current is 950 ∠-30o.Assume PVC conduit.

2. Determine the percent voltage drop for a 50 kVA, 480/240 V, single-phase

transformer having a resistance of 1.3% and a reactance of 1.7%. Calculate the
following load conditions:
i) full-load unity power factor
ii) full-load 0.8 leading power factor
iii) full-load 0.8 lagging power factor

3. Developer A plans to build 128 units double-storey terrace house at an urban area.
Assume simultaneity factor of 0.9 and power factor of 0.85 lagging. Estimate the total
demand in kVA.

4. Use building area method to estimate the total demand (in kW) for a 3-storey office
building with each floor area of 500 m2. The office design adopts an open plan concept.

5. A domestic dwelling unit plans to install a single-phase, 230 V, 50 Hz supply for a six-
way consumer unit comprising the following circuits:
Circuit 1: A lighting circuit comprising 20 points.
Circuit 2: A thermostatically controlled 3 kW immersion heater.
Circuit 3: A radial circuit of 13 A socket outlets protected by a 20A MCB.
Circuit 4: A ring circuit of 13 A socket outlets protected by a 32A MCB.
Circuit 5: A radial circuit of 13 A socket outlets protected by a 32A MCB.
Circuit 6: A 1 kW air-conditioner with power factor of 0.9 lagging.
Determine the total current demand.
(Refer to Ref Manual, “Assumed current demand for electrical equipment and
circuits”.)
A. Assumed current demand for electrical equipment and circuits.

Current using equipment Assumed current demand

Lighting points Minimum of 100 W per lamp holder

Discharge lighting such as fluorescent tubes Lamp watts x 1.8

2 A socket outlet 0.5 A

Standard household 13 A ring circuit 30 A or 32 A – max floor area 100 m2 wired in

2.5 mm cable

Standard household 13 A radial circuit 30 A or 32 A – max floor area 75 m2 wired in 4.0

mm cable

Standard household 13 A radial circuit 20 A – max floor area 50 m2 wired in 2.5 mm

cable

Cooking appliances The first 10 A or the rated current plus 30% of

the remainder of the rated current plus 5 A if
control unit incorporates a socket outlet

# The allowable diversity is to be calculated as follows:

100% of the current demand of the largest circuit plus 40% of the current demand of every other
circuit
