but each person is responsible for writing up their own distinct answers. Any answer deemed similar
with others will result in a zero and possible failure of class.

1. Holmes (1995) states that Sociolinguists study the relationship between language and society. Do you
agree with this statement? Give your arguments.

2. Sociolinguists’ investigations are based on the view that language is varied. They are interested in
explaining why we speak differently in different social contexts, and they are concerned with
identifying the social functions of language and the ways it is used to convey social meaning. Discuss
and illustrate the underlined bold italic words in this statement. Don’t forget to add some examples to
support your explanation if possible.

3. Language varieties are classified according to several points: the way it used, formality, stratification,
gender, various profession and field and secret language variety. Discuss and illustrate by giving some
examples, three of these classifications.

4. One of the phenomena in bilingual community is code switching and code mixing. Define and illustrate
these terms and also supply concrete data (movie, lyric, novel, etc) as the example of each term.
