STUDY OF 7 LITERACIES

MULTICULTURAL/GLOBALIZATION LITERACY
It is a literacy that was adopted from the work of Hirsch (1988), transforming it
into an inclusive – as opposed to exclusive. According to the ministry of Education
(2013), “culture goes much deeper than typical understanding of ethnicity, race
and/or faith. It encompasses broad notions of similarity and difference”. Hence,
according to Hawkins (2014), “one of the key practices in a classroom for multicultural
literacy is for teachers to not be colour blind, label students, or use of negative
connotations in relation to diverse backgrounds”.
For me, multicultural literacy is the incorporation of the idea of diversity within
the learning of a student through content integration, knowledge construction, and
an understanding for an equity pedagogy that ensures learners to become literate
being aware of different cultures and means of appreciating it.

FINANCIAL LITERACY
According to Will Kenton, financial literacy is “the education is about the topic
that involves the understanding of how money works, creating and achieving financial
goals and managing internal and external financial changes.”
And for me, I define financial literacy as the education and understanding the
different areas of finance including the topics related on to manage personal finance,
that centres of how money works and how it will help achieve learning skills to create
a budget, an ability to track spending, learning the techniques of how money will be
properly handled and managed.

SOCIAL LITERACY
In Larson Marsh’s study of literacy, he explains that social literacy is “the
education of acquiring the ability of interaction between people around within a
society.”
So for me, this literacy educates learners to be more able socially competitive
and deeper understanding towards everyone’s differences.
INFORMATION AND MEDIA LITERACY
Educators such as Gregory define this literacy in the field as electracy. While Jeff
Wilhelm (2000), technology has everything to do with literacy and being able to use
the latest electronic technologies has to do with being literate.
For me, this study of literacy enables learners to be more informed with the help
of media and its various forms. Also, it enables people around to interpret and make
informed judgements as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful
creators and producers of information and media messages in their own.

CYBER/DIGITAL LITERACY
According to Warschauer and Matuchniak (2010), “digital literacy requires
certain skill sets that are interdisciplinary in nature. The 21st century skills that individuals
need to master in order to be digitally literate: information, media and technology;
learning and innovation skills; and, life and career skills”.
In my own understanding, digital literacy is the study of building an individuals’
ability to find, evaluate, and compose clear information through writing and other
mediums on various digital platforms and also, building upon the skills that forms the
foundation of traditional forms of literacy.

ARTS/CREATIVITY LITERACY
Artistic/creativity literacy is defined in the National Coalition for Core Arts and
Standards: A Conceptual Framework for Arts Learning (2014) as follows – “it is the
knowledge and understanding required to participate authentically in the field of
arts”.
I define this literacy as a study that engages learners in artistic learning process
directly using the materials being used for arts and in specific spaces like art studios to
enhance the skill of being artistic and creative.

ECOLOGICAL LITERACY
According to NAAE (2004), ecological literacy is that “it comprises an awareness
and concern towards the environment and its associated problems, as well as the
knowledge, skills and motivation to work towards solutions of current problem and
prevention of new ones”.
In my own understanding, this literacy is on how to be an individual who has the
capacity to understand and be willing to enhance learning towards the environment,
being a literate capacity person that’ll help for the improvement being responsible
throughout the surroundings.
