LITERACY AND IT'S SIGNIFICANCE

1. What is Literacy?

Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create,

communicate and compute, using printed and written materials
associated with varying contexts.
Literacy involves a continuum of learning in enabling individuals to
achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to
participate fully in their community and wider society (UNESCO, 2004;
2017).

Three key features of the UNESCO’ definition of literacy:

- Literacy is about the uses people make of it as a means of

communication and expression, through a variety of media;
- Literacy is plural, being practiced in particular contexts for particular
purposes and using specific languages;
- Literacy involves a continuum of learning measured at different
proficient levels.

2. What is the significance of teaching literacy to young learners?

Literacy is essential to developing a strong sense of well-being and

citizenship. Children who have developed strong reading skills perform
better in school and have a healthier self-image. They become lifelong
learners and sought-after employees. Reading aloud to children at an
early age is the most effective way to help them expand their vocabulary
and recognize written words. Reading also stimulates a child's
imagination and expands his or her understanding of the world. There
are many ways to include reading in all stages of childhood. When
children focus on literacy activities they enjoy, reading will be seen as a
treat, not a chore. Follow these tips at home.

3. How important is LITERACY to the children of today?

On my own perspective, literacy is important for children since

acquiring literacy skills at a young age is associated to a successful
education and life journey. Learning literacy is beneficial for young
children to prepare them, it is necessary that they master reading
abilities that will help them to progress effectively throughout their
learning process. Moreover, early literacy skills development makes it
easier for children to learn and read. Children will seek to learn sounds
and understand words, which will allow them recognize words and
develop their language skills. In overall conclusion, for me the main goal
of learning literacy for children is to establish a strong foundation for
their future learning skills and educational experiences.
