Simulation Activity: Experiment
Title: DIY Respiratory Lungs Model
Objectives:

1. To describe the function of the respiratory system.

2. To witness the process of how lungs expand and contrast.
3. To explain what happens to them when you inhale and exhale.
Materials:
Clear plastic bottle Tape Straw
Balloons (1 big, 2 small) Scissor Cutter
Glue stick/gun

Procedure:

1. Cut a straw into a one (1) long portion and two (2) equally short portions, pin them together and
make it into a Y shape.
2. Cut the top part of the two (2) pieces balloon that represent as right and left lungs where the air
goes to and get inflated, glue it into the both ends of the Y shape straw. Also, cut the top part of
the one (1) big balloon to represent the diaphragm.
3. Get the cap of the bottle and punched a hole through it. Also, cut the bottle into half.
4. Cover the bottle using the cap of the bottle. Insert the top part of the straw into the hole of the cap;
use a hot glue to connect it.
5. Then put the one (1) big balloon that will act as the Diaphragm in the model at the bottom of the
bottle.
Description:

For the simulation, pull the balloon that represents the diaphragm to see the two (2) balloon
inside inflating and deflating
The purpose of assembling this lung model is to demonstrate what happens when we breathe. In
this model, structures of the respiratory system are represented as follows:
➢ plastic bottle = chest cavity
➢ plastic tubing = trachea
➢ Y-shaped connector = bronchi
➢ balloons inside bottle = lungs
➢ balloon covering the bottom of bottle = diaphragm
