The Respiratory
System
What are the different parts of the
respiratory system?
Brainstorm!
Look at all these
organs!

Diaphragm
How do we breathe?
Hypothesize!
Let’s catch our
breath!

Diaphragm
Gas Exchange
Let’s Build the Respiratory System!
Let’s Build the Respiratory System!
Making the Diaphragm Step 3: Stretch the
big balloon so that it
covers the bottom
of the bottle.

Step 1: Cut off

the neck of the
big balloon. Step 2: Cut off
the bottom of the Step 4: Tape the big
bottle along the balloon to the bottom of
dotted line. the bottle. Make sure
there’s no air leaking
around the tape.
Check In
Making the Diaphragm
● What happens to the direction of airflow when you push the balloon into
the bottle rapidly?
● If the bottle represents a human body and the balloon represents the
diaphragm, how does this show/represent the function of the diaphragm
in the respiratory system?
Let’s Build the Respiratory System!
Making the Lungs Step 3: Repeat
step 2 with the
other balloon
and straw.
Step 2: Secure
one balloon on
one straw with
a rubber band.

Note: Make sure to not secure

Step 1: Draw on it so tight that it pinches the
the bronchioles straw.
and alveoli on
each balloon.
Check In
Making the Lungs
● What happens to the balloons when you blow air into it and
when you suck in? If the balloons represent our lungs, what
happens to our lungs when we breathe in and out?
Let’s Build the Respiratory System!
Making the Trachea and Bronchi

Step 1: Insert the end of Step 3: Use clay or tape to

the straw with no balloons cover the holes in the bottle
into the two holes of the cap to make sure that no air
bottle cap. can pass through those
holes.

Step 2: Secure the two

straws together above the Note: Try your best to not
cap with a rubber band. bend the straw while you’re
doing this step.
Check In
Making the Trachea and Bronchi
● If the straws represent our trachea and bronchi, where would we
find the trachea and bronchi?

● What happens if you pinch the tops of the straws and pull the
diaphragm? If the straws represent our trachea and bronchi,
would we normally be able to pinch our trachea and bronchus?
Why or why not?
Let’s Build the Respiratory System!
Your lungs should look something like this!
Let’s Take a Closer Look at Those Alveoli!
Take your glass of water and
make observations like it’s colour,
temperature, movement, etc.

Scientist Tip: When doing any

experiment, it’s always important
to make observations to see what
changes happen throughout the
experiment.
Let’s Take a Closer Look at Those Alveoli!
Step 1: Insert the tea bag
into the glass of water and
make observations. Scientist Tip: Ask questions
like: Did the colour change?
What does it look like when
the tea bag was in the water?
What’s the difference from
the beginning to the end?

Step 2: Once it looks like no

more changes are happening,
make observations on the final
product.
Check In
Looking at the Alveoli
● If the cup of water represents a capillary and the tea bag
is the alveoli, what gas is diffusing into the capillary?
● If the cup of water represents an alveoli and the tea bag is
a capillary, what gas is diffusing into the alveoli?
Fun fact: You can’t breathe correctly while
Oops! It looks like I put a smile on your face
smiling
Big idea: What makes us human?
● Differentiation:
○ Make groups strategically
○ Provide help physically
○ Minimize steps
Thanks!
