ETIOLOGICAL CLASSIFICATION OF DM

Etiological classification of disorders of glycemia*

1. Type 1
= beta-cell destruction, usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency
 Autoimmune
 Idiopathic
2. Type 2
= may range from predominantly insulin resistance with relative insulin deficiency to predominantly secretory
defect with or without insulin resistance
3. Other Specific types
 Genetic defects of beta-cell function
 Genetic defects in insulin action
 Diseases of the exocrine pancreas
 Endocrinopathies
 Drug – or - chemical – induced
 Infections
 Uncommon forms of immune mediated diabetes
4. Gestational DM
Table 1. Sub-Classification of type 2 DM based on Severity
Class FBS Postprandial Blood Sugar**
Mild <140mg/dl Restored to basal
Moderate 140-200 mg/dl Restored to basal
Severe >200 mg/dl Restored to basal
Very Severe >250 mg/dl Not restored to basal
* after 4 weeks on stable diet
** 4-5 hours after a meal
