Introduction
This document provides a high-level information about the Flowmaster V7 release. It includes,
any authorization code changes required, and any major installation changes. Additionally, any
last minute issues found in the final stages of testing are included if any.

This document is located on the DVD and on SupportNet. Changes may be added to this
document after the release. Refer to the Release Highlights documents on SupportNet for the
most up-to-date release information.

New Features
The following new features are available in this release.

Pre-Processing

New Experiments Capability

Variable Parameters allows users to run fast batch simulations and conduct sensitivity studies
by varying one or more input parameters in combination to determine their effect on selected
output values. In this release we’ve re-classified Variable Parameters as ‘Experiments’ with
improved workflow and the introduction of the Extended Parametric License.

In addition to being able to create a ‘Parametric Study’ Experiment, which is equivalent to use
of Variable Parameters, a user can now also create an Experiment using a Latin Square
algorithm to generate an even distribution of unique input data grid values or use a Monte
Carlo Experiment to study the statistical response of a system.

The use of the Latin Square Experiment type is available with an Extended Parametric License.

Latin Square Input Grid

Creating a Latin Square Experiment allows a user to populate the input data grid with sets of
unique values over a specified range simply by entering the lower and upper bounds for each
parameter. Use of the Latin Square algorithm ensures an even distribution of values and the
resulting simulation results are ideal for creating representative meta-models and response
surfaces that fully characterize a Flowmaster system model.

Monte Carlo simulation method

Monte Carlo simulations are included as an Experiment type in this release. This type of
experiment is used to automate the creation and analysis of batch simulations of randomly
generated data to conduct statistical analysis. This type of analysis is useful when one or more
components in a Flowmaster network have a degree of tolerance or uncertainty. By performing
a statistical analysis that varies multiple components at once over a large number of

simulations, a statistical response of the system can be generated in the form of a mean value
and deviation among the distribution of results for any particular feature.

Response Surfaces
Meta-models contain all inputs and outputs from a set of simulation results, derived from either
a Parametric Study or a Latin Square Experiment, with an applied radial function. Meta-models
can be viewed as a response surface by plotting two selected input parameters against a single
output parameter. The quality of the meta-model can be evaluated by inspecting the response
surface for goodness-of-fit and refined by applying a new radial function or by running more
simulations. The meta-models can be saved and exported as C code or as S-Functions both of
which are suitable for use in a real time simulation environment to characterize a Flowmaster
system response, for example when conducting hardware-in-the-loop tests.

Response surface modeling and meta-model generation is available for steady-state analyses
only.

Dynamic Journal Bearing Model

The Dynamic Journal Bearing represents a significant enhancement for the automotive
lubrication user, and complements Flowmaster exists DIN 31652 family of bearing
components, and offers the lubrication system engineer a more sophisticated bearing model.
This all new model is based on the widely used Booker and Martin modeling approaches where
instantaneous oil flow is calculated from mobility vectors at every crank angle, and specifically
accounts for the orbiting effect of journal on oil flow rate, i.e. the ‘dynamic load’, and Martin’s
oil ‘reformation effect’. The Dynamic Journal Bearing has two physical components, ‘Bearing
with Bore’ and ‘Bearing with Groove’, that successfully accommodate the majority of
crankshaft and camshaft bearing lubrication analyses.

Improved Automotive Cabin component

The Automotive Cabin component is now able to be used in four additional analysis options;
‘Incompressible Steady State’,’ Heat Transfer Steady State’, ‘Incompressible Transient’,
‘Incompressible Flow Balancing’. N.B. Prior to V7.9.1 this component could only be used in
‘Heat Transfer Transient’.

Improved Thermal Bridge

This a package of incremental improvements to the Thermal Bridge component that provides
the user with a more flexible approach to modeling laminar flow, as well automatically
recognizing the transition between flow regimes (transition range = 2000 to 4000 Re). In this
release, if the ‘Use Dittus Boelter’ option for calculating HTC is selected, the user is given the
option of specifying the ‘Laminar Nusselt Number’ which will be used in the calculation of
HTC for flow conditions where Re < 2000. The user still has the option of describing the basis
of the heat transfer calculations by specifying HTC as a surface, a curve, or a constant value.

However, it should be noted that the precedence order has now been changed to be consistent
with other Flowmaster components to be as follows: ‘Nusselt Number v Re & Pr’, ‘Heat
Transfer Coefficient v Re’, and finally ‘Heat Transfer Coefficient’.

Advanced Heat Exchanger Improvements

The ADV HX improvements in this release represent an incremental update, and include a
partial Re-factoring of the ADV HX code, and a small number of bug fixes. The bug fixes
correct the implementation of existing models (correlations) and primarily relate to improving
the prediction of Pressure Drop and Heat Duty for single phase, cross-flow, compact heat
exchangers. N.B. These improvements were originally intended for V7.9.0, and were
incorrectly reported as present within the V7.9.0 Release Highlights documents.

Data Management & Collaboration

Flowmaster V7 / FloEFD 12.0 Integration
This release is the first version of Flowmaster to support integration with FloEFD V12.0. This
integration is designed to give users of Flowmaster a streamlined process of getting critical
component level performance data through 3D CFD analysis. The ability to obtain this
information upfront in the design process means Flowmaster users can reduce the risks
associated with system level analysis earlier than before. This enhancement includes:
 Automatic Component Creation – Users can analyze both 2 and 3 Arm components in
FloEFD such as bends, nozzles, junctions, jet pumps, and engines to name a few. The
performance data from FloEFD is then automatically characterized and formatted for use in
the appropriate Flowmaster component.
 Automatic Curve Creation – Users can select a range of applicable X & Y axis quantities
to characterize the data from FloEFD into curves. This performance data is saved to the
Flowmaster database and can then be used in any Flowmaster component with appropriate
matching axis quantities.
 Automatic Surface Creation – Users can select a range of applicable X, Y, & Z axis
quantities to characterize the data from FloEFD into surfaces. This performance data is
saved to the Flowmaster database and can then be used in any Flowmaster component with
appropriate matching axis quantities.

Active Directory access

Active Directory support allows Enterprise customers to manage user groups using Microsoft
Active Directory. Rather than entering each individual user separately using the built-in User
and Group Permissions utility, users can be added and maintained from roles defined in
Microsoft Active Directory, thereby reducing administrative overhead and simplifying adding
new users. This was initially introduced at Version 7.8.4 and has been enhanced in this
release.

For this release, security is now applied more consistently throughout the project hierarchy
with data and networks owned at the project level with permissions cascading down to sub-
project level.

Viewing all assigned Projects and Roles - For a user with access to many projects and roles,
Version 7.9.1 now provides the ability to check which projects are assigned and which roles
apply within specific projects.

Project Sharing and User Group Management

Project sharing enhancements have been introduced to allow sharing of sub-project and the
user permissions now automatically cascade from projects to sub-projects.

For a detailed list of new features, refer to your product specific manual or README file,
available in the installed software tree or on SupportNet.
