TITLE: Nursing Perspective and Jurisprudence
CREDIT: 3 units

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Nursing Perspective and Jurisprudence is concerned with the critical examination of the history of nursing, nursing
theories and nursing practice as the fundamental framework on the nursing profession; the development of the
nursing laws and the new Code of Ethics for Nurses (BON Resolution 2004); the current issues and trends in health
services and its implication to the nursing profession. Inclusive of this course are the laws that influence nursing
practice in the Philippines.

Through this course therefore, the students will gain learning insights that will help them adjust to the constantly
changing demands of the nursing profession.

OBJECTIVES

Throughout the course, each student is able to:

(1) Discuss the significance of the historical development of the nursing profession to the recent nursing
practice in the Philippines;
(2) Appreciate UP-SHS BSN Training, a part of the Step Ladder Curriculum that is the innovative medical
program of the UP System;
(3) Differentiate BSN Training in UP-SHS and in traditional schools of nursing;
(4) Expound on the development of the nursing profession with the UP-SHS BSN Program taken as a
significant aspect in the history of contemporary nursing;
(5) Apply the nursing theories in the nursing process approach to nursing care of patients, families and
communities;
(6) Practice ethical and moral principles in professional nursing care of patients, families and communities;
(7) Execute the functions, roles and responsibilities of a professional nurse as provided in RA 9173;
(8) Analyze the influence of current issues and trends in health service with today’s nursing practice.
