Apres un rŒve
Romain Buss me Gabriel FaurØ
(1830-1899) (1845-1924)
After an anonymous Tuscan poet

Composed 1878? op. 7, no. 1. The publisher, Harnelle added the opus number, at the request of Faurd, in 1896.
Dedicated to Madame Marguerite Baugnies. Published by Choudcns, 1878; Harnelle, 1887, first collection, no, 15. First
performance, SocidtØ nationale de musique, 11 January 1879, Henriette Fuchs, soprano. Romain Bussine, professor of
singing at the Paris Conservatoire, adapted the text from an Italian poem titled "Levati sol else la luna 6 levatai." It is
written in an Italianate hel canto style, no doubt inspired by Rune’s relationship with the Viardot family. FaurØ was
engaged to Marianne Viardot, daughter of Pauline Viardot (see "Fleur dessØchØe"). Marianne terminated the engage-
ment, and FaurØ composed this song the evocation of a lost Vision of love soon after. FaurØ’s other Italianate settings
("SØrØnade toscane," "Barcarolle" and "Chanson do pŒcheur") also belong to this period. The popularity of this melodic
has occasioned many instrumental transcriptions.

Apres on rave After a dream

Dans un sornmeil que charmait ton image In a sleep charmed by your image
J e rCvais le bonheur, ardent mirage; I dreamed of happiness, ardent mirage;
Tes yeux Øtaient plus doux, ta voix pure et sonore, Your eyes were soft, your voice pure and rich,
Tu rayonnais comme un ciel Øclaird par l’aurore. You were radiant as a sky lit by the dawn.

Tu rn’appelais et je quittais la terre You called me, and I left the earth
Pour rn’enfuir avec toi vets la Iurniere; To flee with you towards the light.
Les cieux pour nous, entr’ouvraient leurs nues, The heavens parted their clouds for us
Splendeurs inconnues, lueurs divines entrevues... Unknown splendors, glimpses of divine light..

HØlas, hØlas, triste rØveil des songes! Alas, alas, sad awakening from dreams!
J e t’appelle, C nuit, rends-rnoi tes mensonges; I call to you, o night, give inc hack your illusions;
Rcviens, revieris radieuse, Return, return in radiance,
Rc’vicns, Cl lulit inystCrieuse! Return, o mysterious night!
