Excellent job everyone!

You all contributed very well researched and written discussion posts this week, I hope you found this forum as
enlightening as I did.
Synopsis of your findings:
The competencies for ID positions were varied. However, there were some general themes with most
common requirements including:

 High level communication and collaboration skills

 Knowledge of learning theory
 Ability to use a variety of software programs to create and deploy information
 Different levels of prior experience or degrees. Usually experience was preferred, but that can be
demonstrated in various ways
 Government/military, and K-12 work required very specific credentialing
 Experience in the industry/ already a SME
 Teaching experience
Most agreed that the postings for instructional developer and instructional technologist showed some
overlap. Noticed differences were that the developer/designer roles more often spoke of interactions, working
with a team, and creation. Instructional technologist roles usually leaned towards proficiencies with the
technology/software and ability to train others how to use it.
Items to include in a portfolio when applying to these jobs included professional accomplishments that
answered the prompts in the ads such as:

 Project management, and ability to work with SMEs

 Ability to work independently and time mgt. skills
 Software knowledge
 Previously created teaching and training artifacts
 Media presentations
 Media testimonials as professional references
 Certifications such as QM training, software or LMS competencies
As Nicholle said, each week you will be working on a new piece of your final project/portfolio. While you may
each be working towards different professional goals, this activity should help you envision a general schema
of what you would want to demonstrate to prospective employers. Take this opportunity to reflect on how you
can showcase your progress through this program as you work on developing your portfolio site.
Have a great week, I’ll see you in module 2!
