FULL WAVE RECTIFIERS WITH FILTERS

I. Objectives
The main objectives of this experiment are to design and realize centre-tapped full wave
rectifiers using capacitor filter, inductor filter, π-section filter, L-section filter and to measure the
ripple factor of the output signal in every case.

II.Components and Apparatus Required

Diodes (IN4001), Step down centre-tapped transformer, Decade Resistance Box, Decade
Capacitance Box, Decade Inductor Box, Bread board, Connecting wires and CRO

IV. Design Equations

Filter type Ripple factor

Capacitor
2900 ∗ 10−6 /(𝐶 ∗ 𝑅)

Inductor
R⁄ 1335𝐿

L-section 1.195 ⁄ 𝐿𝐶

Π-section 7310 ⁄ 𝐶1 𝐶2 𝐿𝑅

For computing the Ripple factor of capacitor, L section and π section filters from the
observed waveforms

Ripple factor = 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 / 𝑉𝑑𝑐 , where 𝑉𝑑𝑐 = 𝑉𝑚 − 𝑉𝑟 /2 and 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 = 𝑉𝑟 /2√3

For computing the Ripple factor of Inductor filter from the observed waveform

Ripple factor = 𝑉𝑑𝑐 / 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 , where 𝑉𝑑𝑐 = 𝑉2 − 𝑉1 /2 and 𝑉𝑟𝑚𝑠 = 𝑉1 /2√2

V. Experimentations
1. Connect the circuits as shown in the figure.

2. For each case, vary the values of C or/and L accordingly to obtain the least ripple factor.

3. Draw the rectified waveforms, observe, evaluate and tabulate the ripple factor for each case.
