Introduction

A practicum, also called on-the-job-training or internship, is a course of a university which aims to expose
its students to real-life work experience and is a requirement by most college degrees as a prerequisite for
graduation. Its objectives are to give the students a feel of the actual working atmosphere, expose them to current
trends, developments and needs of a particular industry, and broaden their practical experience and outlook on
their line of work so they will have the proper values, perspective, and attitude in the future. An effective training
is one that exposes them to a wide range of activities and experience that is inside their field of specialization
and is related to their future occupation.

Undergoing an OJT is essential as it opens up opportunities for the students to apply theories and lessons
discussed on a classroom lecture and allows them to have practical learnings that are not often taught in lecture-
based classes, thus preparing them for better future employment. Through this, the students can earn a wider
perspective of what and where they want to be in the future and their preferred line of work. And not only does
the interns learn more about their specific future careers but with this, they are also familiarized with the
application and hiring process of industries.

Aside from the aforementioned advantages of the internship to students, it also benefits the company as
it brings more manpower with little to no compensation as compared to a regular employee. Employers benefit
from these placements because they often recruit employees from their best interns, who have known
capabilities, thus saving time and money in the long run. The benefit of bringing interns into full-time employment
is that they are already familiar with the company and their position and typically need little to no training.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sto. Tomas Branch Industrial Engineering Program
requires its students to undergo two internships on the summer semesters before their fourth and fifth years,
requiring 320 hours each. This allows students to be exposed in two different fields and companies, thus bringing
a more diverse experience. The internship before the students’ last year in college is most important because it
is the time that the students have already acquired more knowledge from their classes and previous internship
and opens up opportunities for absorption.
