Fat patient: Doctor, I want to lose weight fast.


Paciente gordo: Doctor, quiero perder peso rápidamente.

Doctor: It is very easy, just keep shaking your head, left and right.
Doctor: Es muy fácil, sólo mueve la cabeza de izquierda a derecha.

Fat patient: All the time?


Paciente gordo: ¿Todo el tiempo?

Doctor: No, only when someone offers you food.


Doctor: No, sólo cuando alguien te ofrezca comida.

Little Johnny asked his father, "Dad, can you write in the dark?"
Jaimito le preguntó a su padre, "Papa, sabes escribir a oscuras?"

His father said, "I think so. What do you want me to write?"

Simple past (refers to an action that began and finished in the past)

- Remember, use DID as an auxiliar in negative and interrogative


- DID is used with regular or irregular verbs.

Example with Regular verb irregular verb

He CLOSED the door They ate pizza (ellos comieron pizza)

(-) He DID NOT close the door They didn´t eat pizza

(?) DID he close the door? DID they eat pizza?

Yes, he close the door Yes, they did

No he didn´t No, they didn´t

The past progressive talks about something that was happening
before, but for a period of time. It uses was or were + verb-ing like was
eating or were playing. It gives a background for something that was happening while a different
event happened.

Example: While I was eating, the telephone rang.

So, during the time I was eating (let's say from 6:30-7:00 p.m.) somebody called my house
(let's say they called at 6:49p.m.) One thing happened (simple past) during the period of time
another thing was happening (past progressive.)

Here is another example: They saw an old man as they were walking down the street.
