Robinson Crusoe was shipwrecked on an uninhabited island. All his shipmates were drowned.
He managed to save some animals from the wreck, as well as some tools and a gun. He lived
alone for many years but was frightened one day to find a footprint in the sand. He was afraid
cannibals had been on his island and kept a careful watch. One day he saw a party of them
landing from canoes. They had with them some captives whom they were going to eat. One of
these men dashed away as he was going to be killed and escaped with Crusoe’s help. As this
happened on a Friday, Crusoe gave him the name of Friday. Although a savage himself,
Friday was grateful to Crusoe for saving him and became his faithful servant. The two men
lived together for several years. One day they saw a ship anchored near their island. The crew
had mutinied and was going to kill the captain. Crusoe and Friday saved him, however, and
the captain took them back to England.
