1. What were the conditions of the earth at the beginning of the movie? What was
DUTCHBOY? What was it for? How does it work?
A: In the beginning of the movie, it showed us the series of catastrophic extreme weather
events that wiped out entire cities. The U.S government and other countries agreed to create
a massive satellite called “Dutch Boy” to track extreme weather systems and eliminate
them before damage can be done.
2. How does politics intervene with environmental conservation and protection of resources
in the movie? Does this happen in real life? Site some examples.
A: The politicians in the movie control or demand the action taken by DUTCHBOY. In
real life, these kind of situation happened every day to the point where they have to kill
someone if that someone is able to discover their motive. Just like in the movie where they
killed Cheng long in order to protect their secret. In reality, environmentalists are in danger
because they are against the actions or activities of corporations that harm the environment.
3. With the modern and fast advancement of our technology, how realistic is the creation of
DUTCHBOY in the real world?
A: Today our technology is still not advanced enough to create something like dutchboy
since geoengineering still needs more research and understanding a field centered on the
idea that we can use climate or weather modification technologies to slow climate change.
Base on my research, in 1989 scientist James Early suggested parking a “constellation of
satellites” between Earth and the sun to reduce the solar radiation striking on Earth but the
math didn’t work out then and it doesn’t now. Also to offset the warming from a doubling
of CO2 from Earth orbit, we would need to have 10 million square kilometers of satellite
area, which is huge. Doing so would risk creating a Geostorm.
4. What was/were the conflict that arose in the movie? How was it resolved?
A: The conflict that arose in the movie was when the system begins malfunction. First was
when a desert town in Afghanistan is encased in ice. Second was extreme heat causes
catastrophic explosions in Hong Kong. Anyone who investigates these incidents ends up
dead. When Jake Lawson learned that someone was trying to kill him, then became more
suspicious which led him telling his brother not to trust anyone that someone is trying to
weaponize DUTCHBOY. Last was the time for Geostorm, which is coming in less than 90
minutes. To stop DUTCHBOY they would need the President Palma to get the kill codes
but to do that they have to kidnap the president because they learned that Dekkom was the
mastermind of controlling DUTCHBOY. It was successful in bringing the kill codes to his
brother and ending the weather abnormalities.
