Learning Style Assignment

Auditory Learner

 One of the greatest struggles English language learners face is understanding

English. For this reason, auditory learning can be difficult for ELL students. In

order to accommodate them, we can use bilingual education strategies such as

teaching certain lessons in their native language. This allows them to be able to

understand the essential information and not focus on the language being

spoken.

Applied Learner

 For any child, some information taught in school is hard to grasp. In order to

make sure the information resonates with each student, including ELL students,

educators can relate the information to real life situations and objects. By

knowing the interests and cultures of our students, we can pinpoint their

interests. This can help us to shape our instruction around what is liked and

familiar to the students. Hopefully, this will help the students to gain a deeper

understanding of the information they are being taught.

Spatial Learner

 These learners are able to visualize and mentally see how things work. If a

teacher has an ELL student who is a spatial learner, they could implement
instruction that plays to this ability. The subject I can see a teacher most applying

this learning to is science. In science, students are able to assemble, repair, and

investigate things. For example, if you are studying water wheels, the students

may be able to construct their own wheel and pour water on it. The goal can be

for them to identify which wheel and method of pouring water is most effective.

By having the opportunity to create multiple wheels and spill the water on it in

different ways, the students will be able to use trial and error to create an

understanding. Essentially, this is assembling their ideas and repairing anything

that may go wrong. This can help ELL students to better understand topics they

are having a hard time grasping.

Social Learner

 This type of learner likes to work directly with classmates and instructors. This

can be very beneficial when working with ELL students. If a teacher is able to pair

the ELL student up with a high achieving student or even possibly a previous ELL

student, the current ELL student can benefit. By having that resource available to

them, the ELL student will be able to work with someone else to deepen their

knowledge on the information being taught. Also, by exposing the ELL student to

other students in the class, they are being immersed in the English language. This

can help them to strengthen their understanding of the new language as well

[English].
Creative Learner

 All children tend to be creative by default. By allowing them to use their

creativity in the classroom, you are allowing them to potentially flourish. It is

important to remember this when you have an ELL student. Just because they

may not be proficient in English does not mean they can’t use their creativity to

construct an understanding of topics in their minds. For example, you can have

them complete performance-based assessments. Since the ELL students will be

able to investigate and discover information, they may have an easier time

remembering the information.

Know their learning styles

 It is extremely important for teachers to not only know, but also understand the

different learning styles of all their students. When this is understood, the

teacher is able to give instruction in a way that is beneficial for their students.

This can potentially lead to their students understanding topics more and also

enjoying their learning. When any student is in their comfort zone, they are more

likely to excel and succeed.
