Have you ever thought of existing in this world without Internet?

As a student, can you become

the best version of yourself without using the Internet? Or while in class, were you ever caught of using
your gadget and browse the Internet? Well, according to Vicky Rideout, from Common Sense Media, a
nonprofit organization in San Francisco, USA, Internet addiction is a typical use of the internet that
causes the psychological, social, educational, or occupational problems for the people, especially for the
students. Internet access must be limited because of students who spend most of their time in the
virtual world gradually move away from the real world, experience its negative effects, and fail to
understand its benefits.

Firstly, student’s Internet access must be limited because they, the students, are moving away
from the real world and would prefer to stay in virtual world. A review study from Nottingham Trent
University looked back over earlier research on the psychological characteristics, personality and social
media use. This brings students to social isolation due to heavy use of internet use. They no longer
spend hours gazing at a computer screen after class; instead, they use their mobile devices to stay
online everywhere, all the time.

Secondly, there are negative effects of misusing the Internet on students and teenagers.
According to the British Journal of Sociology of Education written by Asdaque, Khan and Rizvi (2010)
these negative effects are as follow; first, one of the features of Internet is the unlimited source of
information, therefore students are lacking of creativity because they only need a few minutes to get all
information they need from the Internet then copy paste into their work; second, when students and
teenagers use of Internet is too much, the abandonment of family will occur as one of the negative
effects of Internet; third, insomnia is a sleeping disorder that happens when people are not able to rest
or sleep and this is a common problem to students; fourth, internet addiction is not less dangerous than
other types of addiction; and last, students are prone to moral corruption since the Internet offers
everything which includes black websites like pornography and the likes.

Lastly, limiting students Internet access will maximize the benefits of using the Internet
properly. I cannot deny that by simply using your phone or laptop, students can easily access internet
anywhere and can able to clarify their doubts. So internet gives so many benefits to students. They can
use it for their career growth and get more knowledge. Students can learn a lot of skills by simply
watching and reading things in the Internet. The students who are the future of the country they must
know some knowledge about how to use the internet in proper way.

Come to think of it, there are many avenues and ways for student to grow and prepare for their
career. Students can use books in the library or read non-fiction and fiction books to clarify their doubts
and learn more. And even though it is true that nowadays student must know how to use the Internet
for better communication, we must realize also that Internet provides connectivity but not connection.
To develop connection in the real world is far better than connectivity within the virtual world. Again,
we must limit students Internet access. Students must also learn the value of putting hard work in
everything they do and must not simply rely on the convenience of the Internet. Students must know
how to have a sense of community. The community in the virtual world is not real and the people
engage in this kind of world do not have intimate or personal experience of community that when they
lose Internet connectivity; they lose their virtual community. While developing personal and communal
engagement in real world will help students make connections and authentic relationships. Again as the
saying goes “Internet provides connectivity but not connect!”
In conclusion, limiting the access to other internet for students has become a necessity. Because
of students who spend most of their time in the virtual world gradually move away from the real world,
experience its negative effects, and fail to understand its benefits; Internet access must be limited.
Therefore, I would suggest that, we, as Lasallians, must limit our use of Internet. I like to think though
that our attention would be more focused on our studies and become the best version of ourselves in
the future. We must not rely too much on technology and internet. We can still exist without it. Thank
you!
