Earthquake is one of the most destroying natural disasters. Unluckily it often happens in several regions. Recently a
horrible earthquake has shaken West Sumatra. It has brought great damages. Why did it occur? Do you know how an
earthquake happens?
Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy
causes the seismic waves. It make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other,
they stick a little. They don't just slide smoothly. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving. After a while, the
rocks break because of all the pressure that's built up. When the rocks break, the earthquake occurs.
During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they continue to move until they
get stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks is called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the
focus is called the epicenter of the earthquake.

Faraday studied the magnetic field around a conductor carrying a DC electric current. While conducting these studies,
Faraday established the basis for the electromagnetic field concept in physics, subsequently enlarged upon by James Maxwell.
He similarly discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and laws of electrolysis. He established that magnetism could
affect rays of light and that there was an underlying relationship between the two phenomenA. His inventions of electromagnetic
rotary devices formed the foundation of electric motor technology, and it was largely due to his efforts that electricity became
viable for use in technology.
As a chemist, Michael Faraday discovered benzene, investigated the clathrate hydrate of chlorine, invented an early form of
the Bunsen burner and the system of oxidation numbers, and popularized terminology such as anode, cathode, electrode, and
ion. Although Faraday received little formal education and knew little of higher mathematics, such as calculus, he was one of the
most influential scientists in history. Historians of science refer to him as the best experimentalist in the history of sciencE. The
SI unit of capacitance, the farad, is named after him, as is the Faraday constant, the charge on a mole of electrons (about
96,485 coulombs). Faraday’s law of induction states that magnetic flux changing in time creates a proportional electromotive
force. Faraday was the first and foremost Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, a position to
which he was appointed for life.
Albert Einstein kept a photograph of Faraday on his study wall alongside pictures of Isaac Newton and James Clerk
Maxwell. Faraday was highly religious. He was a member of the Sandemanian Church, a Christian sect founded in 1730 that
demanded total faith and commitment. Biographers have noted that a strong sense of the unity of God and nature pervaded
Faraday’s life and work.

Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic because of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and other air pollutants dissolved in it.
Normal rain is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6. Acid rain may have a pH value as low as 2.8. Acid rain can severely damage
both plant and animal life. Certain lakes, for example, have lost all fish and plant life because of acid rain.
Acid rain comes from sulfur in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulfur dioxide (SO2 ). Most sulfur leaves factory
chimneys as the gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) and most nitrogen are also emitted as one of the nitrogen oxides (NO or NO2
), both of which are gasses. The gasses may be dry deposited–absorbed directly by the land, by lakes or by the surface
vegetation. If they are in the atmosphere for anytime, the gasses will oxidize (gain an oxygen atom) and go into solution as
acids. Sulphuric acid (H2 SO4 ) and the nitrogen oxides will become nitric acid (HNO3 ). The acids usually dissolve in cloud
droplets and may travel great distances before being precipitated as acid rain.
Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and ammonium help promote the formation of acids in clouds. More
ammonium (NH4 ) can be formed when some of the acids are partially neutralized by airborne ammonia (NH3 ). Acidification
increases with the number of active hydrogen (H+) ions dissolved in acid. Hydrocarbons emitted by, for example, car
exhausts will react in sunlight with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone. Although it is invaluable in the atmosphere, low-level
ozone causes respiratory problems and also hastens the formation of acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it
dissolves and liberates heavy metals and aluminum (Al). When it is washed into lakes, aluminum irritates the outer surfaces
of many fish. As acid rain falls or drains into the lake the pH of the lake falls. Forests suffer the effect of acid rain through
damage to leaves, through the loss of vital nutrients, and through the increased amounts of toxic metals liberated by acid,
which damage roots and soil microorganisms.

Tsunami occurs when major fault under the ocean floor suddenly slips. The displaced rock pushes water above it like a
giant paddle, producing powerful water waves at the ocean surface. The ocean waves spread out from the vicinity of the
earthquake source and move across the ocean until they reach the coastline, where their height increases as they reach the
continental shelf, the part of the earth crust that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor up to the land.
A tsunami washes ashore with often disastrous effects such as severe flooding, loss of lives due to drowning and
damage to property.
A tsunami is a very large sea wave that is generated by a disturbance along the ocean floor. This disturbance can be
an earthquake, a landslide, or a volcanic eruption. A tsunami is undetectable far out in the ocean, but once it reaches shallow
water, this fast traveling wave grows very large.

38. Tsunami happens because ....

A. The displaced rock pushes water above it D. The waves moves across the ocean until they reach the beach
B. A major fault under the ocean floor slips suddenly E. A tsunami is undetectable far out in the ocean
C. The ocean waves spread out from the vicinity of the source
39. What are the impacts of tsunami?
A. The part of the earth’s crust that slopes, or rises, from the ocean floor down to the land
B. A tsunami washes ashore with often disastrous effects such as flooding and loss of lives
C. A tsunami is a very large sea wave which is not generated by a disturbance a long the ocean floor
D. tsunami is detectable far out in the ocean
E. Once tsunami reaches shallow water, the wave never grows very large
40. We understand from the text that tsunami ..
A. Causes the movement of earth
B. Forms a new shape of coastline
C. Makes unfortunate event
D. Rises a new coastal land
E. Displaces rocks to land
II. ESSAY
Flooding is a disaster which commonly happens in large and densely populated cities. In Indonesia, the floods hit Jakarta very
often and cause many victims. The process of natural flooding is preceded by rain which falls to the surface of the earth. Then
the rain water is absorbed by the ground surface and flows to the lower place. Once that condition happens, evaporation and
the water appear to the surface of the land. Flooding can be disastrous for humans when floods happen in an area that people
live because the water carries along objects like houses, bridges, cars, furniture and even people.

On the other hand, the process of non-natural flooding is usually caused by bad habits of humans who do not care about the
environment, such as littering that can make water flow clogged. This makes the water deposited in landfills which gradually
becomes more common. When water reservoirs can no longer hold water discharge, the water then overflows out the land and
cause flooding.

Answer the following questions based on the text above!

1. How does the flood happen?
2. What is the natural cause of flooding?
3. How can human bad habits cause flooding?
4. What are effects of flooding?
5. What should people do to avoid flooding?
