Backpressure tests for operators

The need for in-use backpressure checks by operators of exhaust systems which use an
Engine Control Systems converter muffler has been thoroughly investigated in actual
field trials. Under normal operating conditions the checking of exhaust backpressure
should not be required.

However, the converter mufflers produced by Engine Control Systems Ltd. do include a
backpressure port to allow in-use backpressure checks to be made in the case such a
measurement needs to be made. The requirement for such a measurement may be
indicated for engines with suspected or known engine faults (i.e., excessive smoke,
excessive idle at cold temperatures, fuel injector problems, excessive oil consumption or
excessive oil fill of crankcase, or engine failure).

The following are recommended procedures for checking and cleaning converter
mufflers:

Procedure 1: Backpressure Check

(a) Remove plug from the NPT backpressure coupling located on the inlet side of the
converter muffler and install manometer or backpressure gauge (a range of at least 0"-
80" H2O or 0"-6" Hg is recommended).
(b) After thoroughly warming the engine, run at wide open throttle (W.O.T.), full load for
2-3 minutes, then record backpressure while engine is still at W.O.T., full load.
(c) If the backpressure is less than manufacturer’s recommended maximum allowable
backpressure, continue to operate the converter muffler without maintenance.
(d) If backpressure is greater than manufacturer’s recommended maximum allowable
backpressure, continue to procedure 2.

Procedure 2: Clean-out On Vehicle

(e) Operate the vehicle with a high engine load for 15 minutes and re-check W.O.T., full
load backpressure by repeating procedure 1, steps a) and b).
(f) If the backpressure is less than manufacturer’s recommended maximum allowable
backpressure, continue to operate the converter muffler without further maintenance.
(g) If backpressure is greater than manufacturer’s recommended maximum allowable
backpressure contact your Sandvik representative for further assistance.
