New Chimbote – Peru

2019
DESCRIPTION

The marshes of Villa Maria is a complex ecosystem, occupies a very large area and is located in
the department of Ancash. It is located between the districts of Nuevo Chimbote and Chimbote. If
we go from Nuevo Chimbote to Chimbote we will see that before the wetland is the river
Lacramarca and next is the commercial center of Mega Plaza. In the middle of the wetland there
is a small lagoon and some ducks, gulls and more birds are on the water. The slopes are in front
and behind the wetland. We saw that around the entire wetland, unfortunately, there are many dry
plants, very poorly maintained water and a lot of garbage piled up.
PROBLEM

In the marshes of Villa Maria there is a serious problem of contamination, which is a worrying
situation for the health of the animals that inhabit it. This problem is mostly due to some causes
such as:
• People throw garbage when they pass with cars.
• Deterioration of the infrastructure of houses, tracks, drains, etc. due to the high humidity
and salinity of the soil.
• The drainage of nearby towns contaminates the Lacramarca River and with this also the Villa
Maria wetland.
After a while we will see the consequences as seen in the present, we went to the place and saw
that it is in a very bad state, seeing as consequences the following:
• Animals and plants killed by water pollution.
• People don’t visit the place a lot because of the terrible state they are in.
• Low percentage of food for the gulls and ducks that live there.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION

Prevention is the best solution, of that there is no doubt, but it is also true that this type of
contamination can’t always be avoided. Usually, the actions focus on the improvement of recycling
plants to reduce soil pollution and, at the same time, the water, because that ends up polluting it.
The bioremediation of soils is a strategy that seeks to restore contaminated ecosystems using living
beings, such as bacteria, plants, fungi. Depending on the type of contamination that you want to
fight, one or another bioremediating agent will be used. Its application is wide, with interesting
results in contaminated soils.
Then, we could intervene. For example:
• We have got a good idea that is to improve recycling processes.
• We can’t purify the water but we can unite with professionals that help us.
• Authorities have to renew the sewerage system.
