Saint Paul Regional Water Services GAC Filter Media Cleaning

Standard Operating Procedure

Date: 3/14/2016

Objective: Apply SEAQUEST product to remove 3 to 6% of mineral buildup on GAC

media that had been in service for 9 years. This will regenerate the media to allow more
surface area for good type of microorganisms to grow on biological active GAC media.

1. Backwash 2 filters per day using standard filter backwash procedure.

2. When filter is done backwashing, stop the filter ripening sequence and skip the
whole filter ripening sequence so that filter influent valve is not open.
3. Initiate filter out of service mode, and let filter drained to air scour start level.
4. Take 2 filters Out of Service per day for filter media cleaning project, and filter
should be drained to air scour start level. Make sure filter effluent valve is not leaky.
If filter effluent valve is leaky, manually tightened the valve to stop the leakage. If
leakage persists, do not apply any SEAQUEST product for media cleaning.
5. Read Safety Data Sheet: Wear glove and safety glass before handling SEAQUEST
chemical.
6. Fill up SEAQUEST product in a volume labeled bucket with Watson-Marlow
peristaltic pump according to the volume stated in Table 1.
7. Apply SEAQUEST Product per Filter Cell volume as stated in Table 1. Apply SEAQUEST

product to both Filter Cells.

8. Once both Filter Cells dosing with SEAQUEST is done, manually open up Air Scour
valve, and start air blower to apply air to mix the media with the SEAQUEST product

for 3 minutes.
9. Stop air blower and shut off Air Scour Valve after air scour mixing is done.
10. Let Filter soak for 24 hours for sequestering reaction to happen.
11. If filter require no further sequential cleaning, filter can be backwashed and put back
in service or in offline mode base upon plant influent flow rate.
12. If filter require sequential cleaning, then manually open up primary wash water
valve and rinse filter at low rate of 5 to 10 MGD for 1 to 2 minutes. Make Sure Filter
Effluent Valve is not leaky. Then, open up filter-to-waste drain to drain water to Air
Scour Start Level, roughly 1 ft. above media. Repeat Step
6 to 11 until sequential cleaning of four times is done for filter that does not have
any new GAC refill.
13. Then, filter can be backwashed and put back in service or in offline mode.
