The Philippines is a country that has varied cultural influences. Most of these influences are
results of previous colonization, deriving mainly from the culture of Spain and the United
States. Despite all of these influences, the old Asian culture of Filipinos has been retained
and are clearly seen in their way of life, beliefs and customs. Wherever you go, Filipino
culture is very evident and has largely been appreciated and even applauded in many parts of
the world.

Prior to Spanish Colonization. the islands were composed of different kingdoms, rajahnates and
sultanates. Over time, social and political organization developed and evolved in the widely
scattered islands. The basic unit of settlement was the barangay (a Malay word for boat that came to
be used to denote a communal settlement). Kinship groups were led by a datu (chief), and within
the barangay there were broad social divisions consisting of nobles, freemen, and dependent and
landless agricultural workers and slaves. In 1521, the Philippines did not have a national identity.
Instead, the archipelago were comprised of hundred of territories occupied by different tribal groups
who fought and traded with one another. It was already a major cultural and trade crossroads.

In terms of food, our forefathers did not suffer from any lack thereof. Blessed with such a resource-
rich country, they had enough for themselves and their families. They had cooconut, rice and many
articles of food.
