Serious Games Design Project – 400 points

Part 1 Learn the principles of game design by discovering what makes a game challenging,
engaging and fun, while embedding social issues in gameplay.
After completing Intro to Game Design, Goals Obstacles and Chance, Core Mechanics and
Found Object Game modules,(20 points each) display your knowledge of the 5 principles of
game design by creating a digital infographic reflecting the principles: Space, Goal,
Components, Core Mechanics, and Rules. You may use the software of your choice: Publisher,
Canva, Pictochart, Adobe Spark. Submit the infographic in Canvas to be graded.

Part 2 After completing the Serious Games module (20 points)and reviewing the G4C themes,
choose a theme, then plan and design your serious game using the 5 design principles. Using
markers, colored pencils or crayons, create a 12x18 marketing poster advertising your game. Be
sure to outline how the 5 principles are addressed in your game. (Example: Enviro-man uses the
core mechanics of running and jumping to save the environment!)

Part 3 Write code for your serious game in your chosen integrated design environment
(Scratch, Unity, Game Salad) Continually test and modify your game to make it as fun and
challenging as possible while addressing the social issue in your theme. Once it is complete,
submit it both to Canvas and to the Games for Change website to enter the contest.
