Berge Stahl

MS Berge Stahl is a bulk carrier. Until the delivery of MS Vale Brasil in 2011 , it was
the world’s longest and largest iron ore carrier for a full 25 years and famous amongst all
mega bulk carriers ever built. It was registered in Douglas, Isle of Man. Before that, it was
registered in Stavanger, Norway as well as in Monrovia, Liberia. An iron ore carrier, Berge
Stahl had a capacity of 364,767 tonnes deadweight (DWT) . It was built in 1986 by Hyundai
Heavy Industries. The vessel is 342.08 m (1,122 ft) long, had a beam, or width, of 63.5 m
(208 ft), and a draft, or depth in the water, of 23 m (75 ft). It meant that it could only tie
up at two ports in the world and, even there, passage had to be timed to coincide wi th
high tides.

Her MAN B&W 7L90MCE diesel engine was 9 m (30 ft) high, drives a single 9 m (30
ft) propeller, and puts out 27,610 horsepower (20.59 MW). The ship had a top speed of
13.5 knots (25.0 km/h; 15.5 mph), and had a 9 m (30 ft) rudder. It was owned by the
Singaporean-operated shipping company Berge Bulk. Because of its massive size, Berge
Stahl could originally only tie up, fully loaded, at two ports in the world, hauling ore from
the Terminal Marítimo de Ponta da Madeira in Brazil to the Europort near Rotterdam in
the Netherlands. Even at these ports, passage must be timed to coincide with high tides to
prevent the ship running aground. Berge Stahl made this trip about ten times each year,
or a round-trip about every five weeks. The Berge Stahl joined fleet in 2007, hauling iron
ore approximately eight to ten times each year from the Terminal Marítimo de Ponta da
Madeira, Brazil, to the Europoort near Rotterdam. It takes an average of two days to load
this giant ship, and about five days to discharge.
Berge Stahl can operate from other ports if not fully loaded. In September 2006, the
ship carried ore to the port of Majishan, China, where it was dry-docked and given its
twenty-year inspection. On the return voyage to Rotterdam, the ship picked up a partial
load of ore in Dampier, Western Australia, and Saldanha Bay in South Africa (where the
maximum draft permitted is 21 m). In April 2014, the Berge Stahl received her very last
dry-docking, in Portugal. The owner Berge Bulk announced that the thirty-year-old vessel
performed her last voyage to Rotterdam in the autumn of 2016. It was then headed for dry
dock, where it was refitted before commencing a new contract transporting iron ore from
the Port of Tubarão in Brazil to Sohar, Oman.

Turbin uap umumnya digunakan sebagai mesin utama di beberapa jenis kapal yang
membutuhkan lebih banyak kekuatan untuk menggerakkan. Namun lama-kelamaan,
penggunaan turbin uap menurun karena harga minyak yang lebih tinggi dan pengenalan
teknologi baru seperti mesin Diesel. Untuk alasan persaingan, banyak produsen turbin uap
memutuskan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi turbin uap. Saat ini, turbin uap digunakan sebagai
mesin utama dan / atau mesin gabungan dengan generator turbo atau perlengkapan
pengurangan daya tinggi yang dibutuhkan kapal.

Kapal MS Berge Stahl ini merupakan jenis kapal bulk carrier diamana kapal tersebut
merupakan jenis kapal yang digunakan untuk keperluan komersil. Sehingga kapal jenis ini
membutuhkan efisiensi bahan bakar yang tinggi agar pengeluaran biaya yang diperlukan
lebih sedikit. Efisiensi diesel engine dapat mencapai 55% sememtara efisiensi steam turbin
kurang dari 50%. Sehingga bila me-repowering kapal ini dengan steam turbin, akan
mengurangi efisiensi dari bahan bakar yang digunakan oleh kapal.vHal ini menyebabkan
akan meningkatkan pengeluaran biaya dari operasi kapal yang menjadi lebih besar. Untuk
kapal komersil , hal ini sangat tidak diinginkan karena dapat mengurangi keuntungan dari
owner. Dikarenakan efisiensi yang kecil dibandingkan diesel engine, maka konsumsi bahan
bakar yang dibutuhkan akan semakin meningkat sementara harga minyak semakin tinggi
maka me-repowering dengan steam turbin akan meningkatkan biaya pengeluaran untuk
operasi kapal.

Namun demikian, me-repowering kapal ke sistem turbin uap menjadi pilihan utama untuk
unit penggerak laut yang sangat besar seperti kapal MS Berge Stahl tersebut. Dikarenakan,
keuntungan penggunaan steam turbin seperti menghasilkan getaran yang lebih rendah atau
sedikit, berat yang lebih ringan, membutuhkan ruang yang lebih sedikit, dan biaya perawatan
yang lebih murah.
