How does this subject relate to me and my feelings? Although I don’t really like history
when I was in high school because there’s a lot of dates to be memorized. But this time, our
professor Dr. Chester Buama clear out to us that there’s no memorizations to do, it was more on
readings, dept analysis and understanding. I realized that there’s going to have a lot of activities
and exercises like vlogging and reporting. And it is good to hear when he said that there will be an
In this first meeting of us with Dr. Chester Buama, he introduced himself. I was impressed
by his credentials and achievements. Then after that. he gave some preview about the truth behind
what does really happened in the past specially to Ferdinand Magellan and Dr. Jose Rizal. I can’t
believe that Dr. Jose Rizal was just four feet and nine inches tall and he was not that handsome as
we know. And there’s also no law saying that Rizal is our national hero. I’ve learned that we can
trace 700 hundred thousand up to 2 million years of history due to historical items on Visayas.
Before Dr. Chester Buama cut the classes, he said that before the semester will end, he will
invite Mr. Jose David Lapuz as guess speaker for the seminar. Mr. Lapuz is one the 45 member-
commissioners of UNESCO, he was the political science teacher of President Rodrigo Duterte. So,

What is history in my perspective? This is the first question that Dr. Chester Buama asked
to us after he distributed the topic that we need to present every meeting. He just gave 12 topics to
the volunteers to be presented and I am one of them. So, in my perspective, history has something
to do with our past. A past events that we will never forget. Some of my classmates defined history
as the things that happened to them that gives a lesson to learn. One of them says that history
repeats itself. But I’ve learned that the word history is focused on chronological accounts of events,
after science and comes from the Ancient Greek ἱστορία (historía), it means 'inquiry', a systematic
presentation of accounts of phenomena without factoring of their dates are in chronological order
and this is according to Aristotle. History helps us to shape our identity and behavior.
Dr. Buama explained that Malay and Negritos wasn’t our ancestors through the process of
carbon dating. Also, we didn’t know if Rizal really retracted what he said to the Spaniards. But I
knew that we already have our own alphabet and language before the Spaniards came to our
country. And it was known as Alibata and Baybayin. In the end, I realized that we cannot move
forward if we don’t study history and can help contribute to build our future, this is according to
our Professor Dr. Chester Buama. So, the best part of this is when Dr. Buama said that the first 5
students with a high score will going to have a free field trip with him.

Why did Magellan left the Portugal and initiate to Spain? Based on what I’ve learned to
Fatimah’s report, she said that Magellan was reported and accused of trading illegally with the
moors. The King of Portugal which is King Manuel I, rejected Magellan’s proposals of finding a
new water route on finding the spice islands. So, Magellan set sail from Spain and started the
expedition consisting of 5 ships and 270 men. Magellan sailed to West Africa and then to Brazil,
where he searched for the South American coast for a strait that would lead him to the Pacific.
According to the report and to what Dr. Chester Buama said, Magellan was the first European
explorer who reach the Pacific Ocean from Atlantic. But he added that Magellan was not the one

Magellan was killed but not by Lapu-Lapu. Dr. Buama clear to us that Magellan was hit by a
poisoned arrow that made him paralyzed and left to die and no one knows who shot him. After
Magellan’s death, the survivors in two ships navigated on Spice Island (Moluccas) and loaded
their hull with spice. Only one ship which is Victoria came back successfully under the command
of Juan Sebastian de Elcano. In the end, Magellan cannot prove that the world is round because he
didn’t comeback. This should be Magellan’s expedition not voyage around the world.
