“PRESENT DAY MODELS OF LEADERSHIP”

In all aspects, there have been leaders who have failed being a leader. This is maybe
because of the leadership style or method they use is ineffective. There have been factors that
they failed because they cannot connect to their people. It is truism that it is not easy to become
a leader in an organization or in business. This is coupled with how you handle your people and
the situation. An anonymous person once said “Great leadership is not a formula or a program; it
is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the heart of others. It is an attitude
not a routine.” When a leader shows this attitude, it influences people. It moves them. It drives
them to do task they are required to do. Leadership is an important issue that needs to be always
addressed in this fast changing world.

In our present scenario today, there are still present day models of leadership we would
like to consider, one is from global and another is from a local leader in our country. They are no
other than Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela of South Africa and our former President Ferdinand
Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr.

These two leaders we admire most have some commonalities; both of them went to
prison cell to presidential office.

President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela of South Africa

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 at Transkei, South Africa. He became the
first black president of South Africa in 1994, serving until 1999. A symbol of global
peacemaking, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Former president Nelson Mandela helped bring an end to apartheid and has been a global
advocate for human rights. A member of the African National Congress party beginning in the
1940s, he was a leader of both peaceful protests and armed resistance against the white
minority’s oppressive regime in a racially divided South Africa. This man is a devoted champion
for peace and social justice in his own country and around the world and these characters we
consider made a great impact to us. His resilience in the face of extreme adversity and his
principled willingness to sacrifice his life for his beliefs is a value that we need to be
inspired of.

Bravery is another quality that describes Nelson Mandela. Mandela did many big things
that show how brave he was. Unbelievably, he was a strong man who remained a freedom fighter
in every aspect of his life, whether he was free or jailed, whether he was trying to dismantle
apartheid or simply trying to get Robben Island’s prisoners access to reading materials. With all
his life’s tragedy, he did not execute any type of violent behavior towards them. This is because
he was a strong believer in nonviolence. Mandela showed bravery by doing what he believed
was right. He is a true hero to all because of his bravery and what he did for South Africa’s
freedom on racial segregation.

I believed that the key to Mandela's political achievements was his ability to sway world
opinion and to function as an effectively persuasive force by his actions and example. Skilled in
the use of symbolism in word and in deed, he became an icon for human rights. His leadership
strategies can be studied as a model by which complex societal forces can be woven together
across differing legal, political and economic domains into a nation-altering transformational
force.
Furthermore, his vision of African nationalism was a force of good and stood for the
concept of freedom and fulfillment for the African people in their own land. He was able to
transform subjugation, suffering and injustices faced by black people into a national struggle—a
struggle of the African people and by the African people for their right to live. He’s thinking
was not about superiority of one group over the other but about equality.

President Nelson Mandela is not only a man of peace and brave person. He’s being as a
generous soul is his character which we admired most. And this we consider, Mandela’s key
legacy is his extensive charitable work, including the creation of the Nelson Mandela
Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and 46664 – the HIV-AIDS initiative named
after his prison number. Here is the quote we love to linger in his book entitled “Long Walk to
Freedom”:

“I always knew that deep down in every human heart, there is mercy and generosity. No
one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his
religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for
love comes more naturally to the human heart than it’s opposite. Even in the grimmest times in
prison, when my comrades and I were pushed to our limits, I would see a glimmer of humanity
in one of the guards, perhaps just for a second, but it was enough to reassure me and keep me
going. Man’s goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.”

This quote is a useful reminder that all men, even the most seemingly hard-hearted, have
a core of graciousness, and that if their heart is touched, they are capable of changing.

President Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr.

Ferdinand Marcos is the tenth President of the Philippines. , He was born on September
11, 1917, in Ilocos Norte province, was a member of the Philippine House of Representatives
(1949-1959) and Senate (1959-1965) before winning the presidential election. After winning a
second term, he declared martial law in 1972. Marcos held onto the presidency until 1986.

His attributes that created an impact in our life is his sense of civility. To evaluate his
grasp of important problems, he would engage a small group of officials for consultations. He
preferred this format over one-on-one meetings. Whenever a problem became contentious and
there was much “noise” among contrary viewpoints, he would get the concerned noisy officials
to sit together to thresh out a solution. Most of the people he worked with were highly respected
persons in various fields of endeavors.

Another characteristic which we admired most to Marcos is that he is a true and

dedicated leader, no other Philippine President had the kind of vision for the country that he
had... and he delivered during the early years of his Presidency. Roads and bridges were being
built, the military was very strong, and the economy was stable. Simply put, the Philippines
was recognized as a great nation.

Even if he was called a Dictator, he gave the Philippines at the center of the world. He
developed many infrastructures and promoted the Philippines in the field of the performing arts.
As far more compared to many presidents, he has given a legacy that many Filipino people could
remember and will always stay in the hearts of the people who loved him.

His loved for the less fortunate is the advocacy of Marcos that we were really touched.
We was not yet born during his regime but by knowing his contributions and what he has done in
the country is a thing that I would forever cherished.

Remarkably, Mandela and Marcos had influenced my life through those

contributions they gave to their people. For all the sacrifices and for the changes they made to
their own country, it influenced us deeply. These influences from them will prepare us to become
a responsible citizen in the country.

We really appreciate the legacy of Nelson Mandela because he became a call to action
and a reminder of the leadership possible for each of us. If he could stand for justice, then we
could — and although he lived what seems like a mythic heroism, he also modeled the humanity
of that leadership role. These values fuel many movements, and Mandela is held up as an
example, much like Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King. He is an icon that becomes
alternatively a flashpoint for activism and a voice of common sense in the face of fear of change.

Of course, needless to underscore, Ferdinand Marcos is a brilliant leader. He is a symbol

of leadership in the service to people, a role model for those of us who want to be of service.
Ferdinand Marcos' greatest gifts were his strength and his bravery and his empathy, the depth
and the breadth of his understanding. He has the capacity for change and growth. And his
unwavering love to Filipino people.

In all honesty, we were really impressed with these two leaders because they possessed
these qualities which are lived-up to their people. Deep self-knowledge, humility, and a strong
moral foundation, dedication to a cause larger than oneself, a clear vision for success, supported
by unwavering determination and the ability to build trust by empathizing with the needs and
concerns of others. They are indeed born leaders, they build a common purpose to serve and
inspire people.

According to The Webster Dictionary, a leader is defined as a person who by force of

example, talents or qualities of leadership plays a directing role, wields commanding influence,
or has a following in any sphere of activity or thought. It defines leadership as that ingredient of
personality that causes people to follow. Leadership is also conveniently defined as the ability to
get things done through others, the process by which a leader exerts influence over others to
move towards a vision. These two leaders have focus on moving people to become better people
and with all their contributions it made them followed and remembered by the people.

These leaders were great at inspiring and motivating others. Although their struggle
involved the achievement of different objectives, their leadership styles were somewhat
similar in accomplishing their goals.

Well, every leader struggles to lift up the status of the economy of their country. Of
course, Nelson Mandela and Ferdinand Marcos during their regime was a transition of economic
development. During their time, of course, there are people who opposes to what they are doing.
They despise the leadership of these two great men to the extent that they wanted these leaders to
get down in their position. Normally, these are scenarios happening in the political and business

world. In spite of having these issues, they are leaders who are strong to fight for what is right,
indeed remarkable to people and to the generations to come.

What is important to us is we need to look up to our leaders, let us believe in them so that
their full potentials and aspiration will build up and will have a positive outcome. Let us not
dwell to their mistakes instead make that mistake a challenge we need to overcome. Let us be
optimistic that we may be proud of our nation.

I would say that “Gratitude is the virtue of the wise”, Nelson Mandela changed us by
changing his country, and by embodying a changing story — from revolutionary to ruler, and He
modeled healing leadership with determination, grace and consistency. From the beginning,
chosen to be the figurehead of the anti-Apartheid movement, Mandela embodied change. He
changed the world because he was the face of democracy in South Africa, representing the many
activists who sacrificed their lives to break Apartheid oppression. Partly because of his role and
status, South Africa achieved international respect and support.

To Ferdinand Marcos, the best, smartest, disciplined, tough, true Filipino president of all
time! He implemented martial law because it was out of love for democracy and his beloved
country. Philippines were starting to get out of control due to the influence and penetration of the
communism to our country. The only way to restore discipline and put his plans into action was
the martial law. He is like a father who spanks his child not because he's abusive but he loves
that child and wants that child to grow up successful. If he didn't implemented martial law, we
probably be # 2 in Asia during that time has one of the best economy, best military, might don't
have the infrastructures that we have. He wants us to stand on our own, not to be a puppet to any
foreign invading countries.

Consequently, these two leaders were astonishing heroes. They both promoted an
inclusive vision of living together with harmony. They possessed countless qualities, many
things that an ordinary person could not have had. They set several examples for our countries to
look up to and learn from. They fought for something that they believed in and they never gave
up. They fought through all the obstacles that came their way. These two leaders were influential
that they are remembered by their leadership qualities which you cannot see in other leaders. As
a student, we will be guided by their formidable qualities in leadership, in life, and in our chosen
field of endeavor. These leaders have touched the human hearts. Their effectiveness as a leader
stemmed from their mastery of their self, coupled with profound empathy- their ability to see the
world through the eyes of others. Underneath their monumental achievements lie their
remarkable journey and a revealing portrait of their man’s character.

“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked man rules, people groan”
Proverbs 29:2
