1)What is Racism? Example
Racism is prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different
race based on the belief that one's race is superior and the belief that all members of each
race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as
inferior or superior to another race or races. the belief that all members of each race
possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as
inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism is something something we have all
witnessed. Many individuals fail to believe that race is not a biological category, but simply
an artificial classification of individuals with no scientifically variable facts.
In other words, the distinction we make between races has nothing to do with genetic
characteristics. Race was created socially, primarily by how individuals perceive ideas and
faces that are foreign to them. Racism still exists in our society. Some people may argue
that racism has no place in our society no we abolished slavery, and had our first African
American president.
Do not forget there was a controversy that would have stripped former President Obama
his presidency if it was proven that he was not a natural-born citizen. No president was
ever accused of not being a natural-born citizen. The difference was that President Obama
was our first coloured president. All of those are true however, racism is not just towards
one race. Yes, the treatment of the coloured community has improved but it is not gone. If
racism is gone how come hate crime rates have increased during the year President Donald
Trump was elected? We as a country have voted and seated a racist white male as the
president of arguably the most powerful country in the world. President Trump tweeted,
Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made
Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do. I like Mike! Mr Trump also said in an interview
about immigrants from Haiti and other African countries "Why are we having all these
people from shithole countries come here?" These two outrageous comments should have
never been said by an individual who is the commander in chief of a country that can turn
countries to ashes. Lone and behold President Donald Trump bombed Syria after just being
a president for less than 4 months. Racism has been imprinted on us since the beginning of
time. We are suspicious of anyone that we are not used to. One example is when someone is
not used to seeing something that is different we tend to associate them with what we have
seen. This all started after a group of 19 men affiliated with Al-Quada performed one of the
biggest terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. This horrendous event painted the Middle Easterners
as evil and violent. Comedian Peter Russell shared a story about his
performance/show in the Middle East talking about how welcoming the people were. Now if
you open the news or media and they are talking about terrorists it would seem that all
Middle Easterners are evil because it was a terrorist attack they blame the Middle
Easterners. That predisposition that was ingrained in our brain that individuals do not
realize causes racism towards other nations and races. So how much we try to say that
racism no longer exists is completely false. Mass Media has played a large role in shaping
people's minds, Movies by Hollywood have been used for propaganda during world war II and
the cold war and the same goes for comic books. The Captain America Marvel movie series
has Captain America fighting Red Skull who was first a commander of Hydra which in the
movie is a subsection of the Nazis. Another Captain America movie now was fighting Buckie
who was a Soviet Union assassin, This was the first comic book that was used to recruit
military men for the wars. This was a long time ago now we have movies such as Olympus
Has Fallen where the main villain was a Korean national and The Interview which had the plot
of two men going down to North Korea to interview their leader Kim Jung Un and they were
recruited by the CIA. Although this was supposed to be a comedy, it still disrespected the
North Koreans in the movie they were using the stereotypes of how we viewed North Korea.
For, most individuals it was viewed as a comedy however, not everyone sees it that way
imagine a child who is just learning by watching had watched that particular movie and that
does not realize that was supposed to have been a harmless joke and took the lesson that
North Korea was bad. This was the same as the silent movies that portrayed black men
were evil and came to rape white women. Now, of course, we know simply that is not true
but during that time if a black man was seen having a relationship with a white woman there
was a big possibility that the people would have had him hanged. People love to categorize
and label everything, Individuals also love to think that they are superior in some way and
what would be the perfect target? That target is no other than the minority. Racism is just
part of discrimination there are other forms such as sexism and gender roles.
2)Fighters Against Racism
Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela 18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-
apartheid activist who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He
was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative
democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by
fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as
the president of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997.
3) What would you do if you were imprisoned for 27
years? Would you be able to forgive your captors, or
would you want revenge? Nelson Mandela chose
forgiveness and never stopped trying to build a better
world.
Mandela: Struggle for Freedom looks at Nelson Mandela and the movement that formed

around him. Follow Mandela into hiding after he is declared an outlaw, and then join him

inside a replica of the prison cell that was his home for 18 years. Experience the bittersweet

joy of his release, after 27 long years of imprisonment. Finally, witness South Africa’s first

democratic elections, and find out about Mandela’s efforts to rebuild a nation shattered by

racism and injustice.

Explore what was happening on the streets during Mandela’s lifetime. Bear witness to South

African children defending themselves from tanks with garbage can lids, and learn about the

secret plan to break Mandela out of prison. Support for Mandela and his cause also came

from outside South Africa. Hear from Canadians who joined the struggle for freedom and

equality and see for yourself the importance of mobilizing and speaking out.
4)Anti-racism

Anti-racism encompasses a range of ideas and political actions which are meant to
counter racial prejudice, systemic racism, and the oppression of specific racial groups.
Anti-racism is usually structured around conscious efforts and deliberate movements
which are intended to provide equal opportunities for all people on both an individual and a
systemic level. As a philosophy, it can be engaged in by the acknowledgment of personal
privileges, confronting acts as well as systems of racial discrimination, and/or working to
change personal racial biases. Major contemporary anti-racism efforts include Black Lives
Matter organizing and workplace antiracism
CONCLUSIONS

We have described seven harmful racial discourse practices which,

taken as a whole, reinforce the common misconception that racism
is simply a problem of rare, isolated, individual attitudes and
actions. We argue that racism is a cumulative and compounding
product of an array of societal factors that, on balance,
systematically privilege white people and disadvantage people of
colour. We have also offered everyday recommendations for how
readers can help overcome these harmful racial discourse
practices.
Reflection

In a moment of despair at the news reporting yet another

black person killed, I realized that the best form of
activism, that we can all do, is to be unapologetically
ourselves. That way, the world will see us and wonder at
our audacity to be equal to them, our audacity to be
resistant to injustice, and our audacity to make the world
beautiful. An equal.

What I want to know more about is:

 How can we stop discrimination in society?

 What are positive ways to resolve discrimination?
 Why is it important to prevent discrimination?
