Impermeabilization of cities
Advantages of surface impermeabilization:
• Protection against erosion.
• Comfort for the traffic.
• Surfaces easier to clean.
• Rapid surface drainage.

Module 5. Sustainable Urban Rehabilitation
Within the Integrated Urban Water Cycle Management, which forms part of the
Urban Regeneration, we find the possibility of applying water sensitive urban
design to solve the problems due to the massive impermeabilization of the urban
areas.
Its main objective is to recover and maintain the hydrologic function of the
original natural terrain, increasing soil infiltration, encouraging evaporation and
recognizing the value of rainwater. To do this you must:
Thinking small: change the traditional focus on the scale of work, reducing and
managing runoff from a small área, using control techniques with reduced
dimensions distributed throughout the area, allowing for greater integration into
the environment.
Source control: not give time nor space for the formation of large volumes of
runoff, cutting the problems in the source with decentralized actions so that a
local failure of a solution does not affect the overall integrity of the control
system.
Use easy and natural solutions: they are more effective in maintaining the
hydrological functions of the ground and cuts the consumption of conventional
construction materials by using natural materials such as native plants or gravel.
