PRACTICE TEST 1 (52p)

ANSWERS
13 The best answer is C. The question asks you to look at the overall trends of the data sets for each substance.
A good way to measure the degree to which data varies would be to find the range, mean- ing subtract the
lowest value from the highest value for each individual substance. In this problem it is clear that NaCl varies
the least with temperature.
14 The best answer is F. In this question you are asked to look at the trends of the substances, especially at how
their concentrations change with increasing temperature. In the data set, some substances become more
soluble with increasing temperature, while some become less soluble. The graph represents the solubility
curve for a substance that gets less soluble with increasing temperature. Looking at the possible answer
choices, HCl is the only logical choice.

15 The best answer is C. It is clear from the table that each substance reacts differently in its solubility
depending on the temperature. However, each substance does show a clear trend in whether it gets more or less
soluble with increasing temperature.
16 The best answer is J. According to Table 1, HCl has a concentration of 55 g/100 g H2O at 60◦C, and a
concentration of 48 g/100 g H2O at 80◦C. There- fore, at 70◦C it would likely have a concentration of 55 + 48
÷ 2 = 51.5 g/100 g H2O.

17 The best answer is D. By looking at the trend in concentration for NH4Cl, 50g are dissolved between the
40◦C and 60◦C measurements. The logical answer choice would then be 50◦C.

ANSWERS
30 The best answer is G. According to Figure 1, the only pair of elements in the answer choices with a bond
energy greater than 420 kJ/mol is H and O (460 kJ/mol), answer choice G.
31 The best answer is C. To answer this question, you must look at Figure 1 to determine which 3 pairs of
elements have the highest bond strength. Element pairs H—F (568 kJ/mol), H—O (460 kJ/mol), and H—H
(436 kJ/mol) have the highest bond strengths in the table, and are therefore, the most stable bonds, which best
supports answer choice C.
32 The best answer is J. To answer this question you must determine the sum of the bond energies for each
answer choice, as shown below:
F. H2O has two H–O bonds: (460 × 2) = 920 kJ/mol
G. H2S has two H–S bonds: (366 × 2) = 732 kJ/mol
H. NH3 has three H–N bonds: (393 × 3) = 1,179 kJ/mol
J. H3Cl has three H–Cl bonds: (432 × 3) = 1,296 kJ/mol
The substance with the highest sum of bond energies is H3Cl, answer choice J.
33 The best answer is A. To answer this question correctly, you must pay attention to the headings in Figure 1.
According to Group 17 in Figure 1, the group bond energy decreases as bond length increase. This
information best supports answer choice A.
34 The best answer is J. To answer this question, you must look at the bond lengths between the given pairs of
elements in Figure 1. The bond lengths for H–O, H–S and H–Se are 96 pm, 134 pm, and 146 pm, respectively.
Therefore, the order of their bond lengths in increasing order is H–O < H–S < H–Se, or answer choice J.

PRACTICE TEST 7 (p. 474-475)

College Entrance Examinations (CETs) Review (2019) in Chemistry

ANSWERS
35 The best answer is D. According to Table 1, Salmonella bacteria had the greatest percent growth at a pH level
of 5. This information suggests a pH level near 5 might best contribute to the growth of the bacteria.
36 The best answer is H. To answer this question you must look at the results shown in all of the tables and
choose the conditions that create the greatest percent growth of bacteria. In Table 1, a pH level of 5 created the
highest percent growth (81%) of the bacteria. In Table 2, the organic compound in Dish 1 created the greatest
percent growth (37%) of the bacteria. In Table 3, a temperature of 40◦C created the greatest percent growth
(83%) bacteria. By combining these three conditions you would expect to get the greatest percent growth.
37 The best answer is A. Table 1 shows that the Salmonella bacteria reproduced most efficiently in a pH of 5
(acidic). A conclusion stating that Salmonella bacteria reproduce most efficiently in an acidic environment
would reaffirm the results of Experiment 1.
38 The best answer is G. To maximize the length of time that bacteria will reproduce, the bacteria should be
provided an unlimited supply of nutrients. In order to make sure the nutrients are not
depleted, the bacteria groups must be regularly resupplied with unlimited nutrients, answer choice G.
39 The best answer is B. In a scientific experiment, the independent variable is the factor that is changed by the
experimenter during the experiment. In Experiment 3, the temperature was changed; each dish had a different
temperature. The factor being studied or observed, in this case the percent of the growth, is the dependent
variable. Whether it changes depends on the manipulation of one or more independent variables.
40 The best answer is J. Answer choice J is the best answer because it is the only answer choice that tests the
bacteria at intervals. Because bacteria reproduce at a rate that varies from one stage
to the next, by testing at 15-min intervals you could study the different stages of growth most effectively.

ANSWERS
25 The correct answer is B. To answer this question, find the symbol for 403◦K in the key, then find 2 hours on
the x-axis. Move your finger up from the 2-hour mark until it intercepts the appropriate symbol. You will see
that the symbol is at approximately 50% on the y-axis.
26 The correct answer is J. To answer this question, find the symbol for 423◦K in the key, and then follow its
movement on the graph. You will see that conversion stops at 8 hours, so eliminate answer choice F. The line
is steepest from 0 to 2 hours, which suggests that this is the period during which most of the conversion took
place.
27 The correct answer is A. In each experiment, 5% Ru/C catalyst was used. The temperature was varied in each
experiment, and the conversion rates were dependent on the various temperatures. Two different types of acid
were used.
28 The correct answer is J. The data in Table 1 and Table 2 indicate a direct relationship between time and
percentage of conversion. As time increased, at each temperature the percent of acid converted also increased
up to a certain point, at which time conversion stopped.
29 The correct answer is A. The conversion of propionic acid was studied in Experiment 2, the results of which
are shown in Table 2. According to Table 2, the conversion of propionic acid at 403◦K stops at 8 hours, which
does not support the chemist’s claim.
30 The correct answer is H. The results of Experiment 2 are shown in Table 2. To answer this question, find the
symbol for 423◦K in the key, and then follow its movement on the graph. Notice that at 12 hours, the PA is
approximately 80% converted. It makes sense that, if the conversion continued, 100% of the acid would be
converted sometime between 12 and 14 hours.
31 The correct answer is D. The passage states that, “Levels near properly adjusted gas stoves are often 5.0 to
15.0 ppm and those near poorly adjusted stoves may be 30.0 ppm or higher.” Because Home 1 has CO levels
greater than 25.0 ppm, it is the most likely home to have a poorly adjusted gas stove.
32 The correct answer is G. According to Table 1, Home 2 has CO levels between 15.0 and 25.0 ppm. The
passage states that average CO levels in homes without gas stoves are between 0.5 and

5.0 ppm, which means the CO levels in Home 2 are above average.
33 The correct answer is A. The passage states that, “Levels near properly adjusted gas stoves are often 5.0 to
15.0 ppm and those near poorly adjusted stoves may be 30.0 ppm or higher. CO levels between 0.5 and 15.0
ppm are considered safe.” This information best supports answer choice A. The remaining answer choices
indicate safe levels.
34 The correct answer is H. According to Table 1, Home 4 has CO levels between 1.0 and 5.0 ppm.
The passage indicates that levels between 0.5 and 15.0 ppm are considered safe. Therefore, the CO levels in
Home 4 are not dangerous, so if it has a gas stove, the stove is properly adjusted and does not have to be
removed.
35 The correct answer is C. According to the passage, “CO levels between 0.5 and 15.0 ppm are considered
safe.” Therefore, a CO level of 10.0, as found in Home 6, will not pose any danger to the residents.
