Reflection

The title of the symposium ‘Our Power: Is There a Better Option than Coal?’ tells
about the investigative documentary tackling Philippines’ dependency on coal as its main
source of energy. Representatives from Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower),
Department of Energy (DOE), the Catholic Church, Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral ng
Pamantasan ng Ateneo de Davao (SAMAHAN) and the academe graced the event to
express their ideas on the matter. They showed a video presentation where a certain
barangay was affected by the black smoke from the coal plant leaving a lot of ashes in
the certain area which lead to health hazard. One of the main issue in Coal power plant
it that they caused air pollution which can harm the environment. As the patrol news
investigate around the residence they found out that many of the children were affected
by the ash causing them skin allergy which was itchy, also the barangay captain said that
one of the family member an infant died due to asthma where the child can sniff the ashes
in the power plant. The Philippines rely much on coal Plant for the source of electricity
since coal, a fossil fuel, is used for being an abundant and cheap source of energy.
However, due to mining, health and environmental hazards associated with it, a global
call to shift to sustainable and environment-friendly sources is more strengthened. With
this we need a solution to take care of our environment. Other countries already make an
alternative way to gain sources of energy which is renewable energy much greener and
eco-friendly. What is renewable energy? This type of sources that can be obtain by the
use of nature like geothermal from the mountains, solar panels from the sun,
hydrothermal from the water this are the kinds of renewable energy that should be
implemented from the World in order to reduce the pollution and reverse the climate
change. The essentially has to be done is through technology we have to disrupt coal-
fired power plants and put them out of business, so that AboitizPower’s investments on
renewable energy can pay-off. Let us go greener for the brighter future of the world.
