CHARACTER ANALYSIS

“JULI”

DESCRIPTION:
Juliana also known by her nickname Juli is Kabesang Tales’s daughter and she is also
Basilio’s sweeetheart. She is Hermana Penchang’s servant wherein she also needs to study
prayers, read books that the friars gave to them and also do the chores. Juli is devoted to Basilio
that when her family falls in debt she rather chose to work as a servant than sell the locket that
Basilio had given her which was also a possession of Maria Clara that went to Basilio’s hands.
Juli became a lonely maiden as her father Kabesang Tales went to jail and when her lover
Basilio was in danger. Juli is a pure and innocent woman yet she is aware of the priests being a
womanizer. She thought to go to Padre Camorra because she has no other recourse to be able
to free Basilio and she knows that it takes only a word from Padre Camorra and Basilio will be
freed. At the end Juli killed herself for she can’t handle what the friar did to her and there was
really a mess because of her especially to all the girls in the convent.

SYMBOLISM:
Juli symbolizes all the women who were abused back in the Spanish period. She also
represents all the women ready to do everything and sacrifice everything just to provide the
safety and justice for all of her beloved in her life, and also in Juli’s character it was portrayed
how love is powerful.

RELEVANCE:
Juli’s character showed to the readers that along the safety of one person there is
goodness, along the goodness there’s pain and along the pain there’s love just like all the things
Juli had done for her love ones. Even though how tough it is a person could do everything for
the good and safety of the people he/she loves. Her character shows how people even now and
then put importance to love and that every person would do anything for the good and safety
of people or something they love just like how Rizal did his best and gave everything for this
country which he loves and treasure the most.
