Unlike with past technological disruptions, we have a relatively clear idea of how this paradigm-shifting
technology will evolve. According to PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) Workforce of the Future report5,
AI has three distinct stages:
1 2 3
The pace of innovation in the fourth industrial revolution, according to the economist and founder of the
World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab6, is faster than any major workforce shift that has come before.
This makes plotting exactly where we fall on the spectrum at any given point in time a challenge. We do know,
however, that we have now entered the emerging stage of AI and augmented intelligence, and that we are
already experiencing disruption in the labor market.

CONCLUSION
One of the first steps toward a better future of work is to understand the unique challenges and opportunities
that lie ahead. Private enterprises with access to big data can make a considerable contribution to this effort.
Another step is for policymakers to play their part as the adoption of AI quickly advances. From the New Deal to
the Obama-era Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the federal government has a long history of
implementing policies that assist workers with training programs.
Although the emerging stage of AI and augmented intelligence has not yet caused widespread disruption of the
labor market, guardrails are needed to support the future workforce and foster job market dynamism.
