Chairman’s note
W e are facing a major challenge today- rising disparities in income
level leading to social tensions. The underlying reason for this problem is
high unemployment and gross underemployment. The recent ILO report
states that job creation in India is not expected to pick up pace in 2017-18
representing a near stagnation in percentage terms. Unemployment in India
is expected to touch 18 million in 2018 as against 17.7 million in 2017. The
best way, it appears, to address this issue is to move towards sustainable
development, which is a powerful tool to reduce inequality and create
livelihoods. One of the driving factors for sustainable development is the
creation of green jobs and careers that can generate employment to blue

collar workers. Besides, it can provide opportunities for entrepreneurship
Chairman, GSA and self employment in emerging sectors like renewable energy, water
treatment, green construction, eco-friendly retail and so on.
The Green Skills Academy has been started under the parent organization
of the Centre for Sustainable Development with the purpose of imparting
skills needed to train people in the green sector. The GSA is affiliated with
the National Skill Development Corporation, under the Ministry of Skill
Development, New Delhi as also the Sector Council for Green Jobs. It plans to
train 23,000 persons in the next 7 years. Of that, about 70% would be facilitated
for employment including self-employment. The Academy offers 14 courses,
ranging from Solar PV training to Smart Cities and Green Entrepreneurship.
These courses range from short duration of about 30 hours to 120 hours or
more. It will also have a Placement cell and an Incubation centre to facilitate
employment opportunities to youth and unemployed graduates. That apart
the academy also offers up skilling programmes for those already in the green
sector who want advanced training in specialized fields. An online library
facility is also being built so that the trainees can access valuable information
including some primary data through our website. The courses will have
lab work and exposure visits that would enrich the hands on experience of
the trainees. Aspiring entrepreneurs would get guidance from successful
mentors and plans are on the anvil to provide micro-financing.
In the years to come GSA will provide the much needed impetus to sustainable
development through green skills and employment. It is my earnest appeal
that all likeminded organizations and companies must join this endeavor to
build an India that is free of poverty and unemployment.
