OPEN-ENDED LABORATORY IMPLEMENTATION IN FKAAS

1. Lab with clear objectives that relates to real case / problem in engineering.
2. Lab that stimulates critical thinking towards complex engineering problem.
3. Do not provide step by step lab procedures. Lab must allow students to think deeper and
find own solution in a group / team.
4. Questions must motivate student towards high order thinking.
5. Questions must not have “yes” or “no” answer.
6. Questions must require explanation that relates to fundamental engineering knowledge.

GENERAL INSTRUCTION TO OPEN-ENDED LABORATORY

In this lab sheet, it has TWO (2) open ended laboratory works to be performed. Students must
plan and organize for solutions by integrating the fundamental knowledge of Traffic
Engineering and technical skill with appropriate laboratory testing equipment and methodology
to fulfill the requirement of each open ended instruction. Students must consult/present and get
approval against the equipment operational procedure and type of data collection before
conducting any testing. Students are reminded to emphasize safety and good ethic when
handling the equipment and other facilities during laboratory session. All findings must be
verified, prepared and fulfilled the requirement of report criteria and others from respective
laboratory instructions.

1.0 COURSE LEARNING OUTCOME

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

i. Prepare reports of environmental and transportation test based on relevant test standards
and compare with theory (CLO1).
ii. Organize ideas and method to carry out suitable testing solving the assigned problem
(CLO2).
iii. Describe the laboratory testing procedures among group members throughout
experiments (CLO3).

2.0 OBJECTIVE OF LABORATORY WORK

The main objectives of this laboratory are as follows:

(a) To conduct traffic data collection at selected location.
(b) To calculate spot speed data, volume, signal timing and phasing
(c) To determine mean speed, 85th speed, delays and Level of Service of the signalized
intersection using JKR Arahan Teknik (Jalan) 13/87 procedure.

3.0 RELATIONSHIP OF LABORATORY TO REAL PROBLEM / CASE STUDY

Local communities which are commuters along the Federal Route (FT050) facing a heavy traffic
during morning and evening peak hours for both directions toward Air Hitam and Batu Pahat.
This recurring incident leads to traffic congestion, delays and also, has complaint on safety
aspect along the route. As a traffic engineer, conduct a relevant study to verify the problem.

4.0 OPEN-ENDED LABORATORY TASK

4.1 Prepare and study relevant manual or guidelines related to the experiments.

4.2 Determine appropriate tools and equipments to be used in this experiment.

4.3 Study the data collection procedure.

4.4 Select the proper location.

4.5 Plan the data collection preparations.

4.6 Complete the pre-study documentation.

4.7 Collect the data and verify with lecturer.

4.8 Analyze the data.

4.9 Finalize the report.

4.10 Report submission.

5.0 OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS

1. In your opinion, list and elaborate the FOUR (4) factors that affect the data collection.

2. Briefly explain the function of pace, standard deviation of speed and 85th percentile speed.

3. Based on your findings, justify whether the posted speed limit is suitable for the location.

4. If the spot speed analysis show majority driver are over speeding. Suggest THREE (3)
methods to control the speeding in the area.

5. Briefly explain THREE (3) factors that affect the Level of Service (LOS) of signalized
intersections.

6. As a traffic engineer, explain THREE (3) actions that can be suggested to improve the LOS
of signalized intersection.
