Opinion Essay – Patch Adams quotes

Steps:
1) Select a quotation from the list of quotes (you also have the entire film script, in a separate document,
if you require more context);
2) Reflect on the issues addressed in "Patch Adams", the film;
3) Using the guidelines below, write an opinion essay starting from the idea(s) expressed in the
quotation.
Guidelines
An opinion essay presents your personal opinion on a topic. Your view must be stated clearly, offering
different viewpoints, which are supported by reasons and/or examples.
Basically, an opinion essay should have:
a) a title
b) an introductory paragraph in which you state the topic and your opinion
c) a main body which consists of several paragraphs, each presenting a separate viewpoint supported by
reasons or examples. You should also include a paragraph presenting the opposing viewpoint and the
reasons why you think it is an unconvincing viewpoint
d) a conclusion, in which you summarize/restate your opinion using different words
Points to consider:
• Decide whether you agree or disagree with the basic idea(s), then make a list of your viewpoints and
reasons;
• Write your essay in paragraphs, joining the sentences with appropriate linking words and phrases. Start
each paragraph with a topic sentence which summarizes what the paragraph is about.
• Linking words and phrases should also be used to join one paragraph with another. (adapted from
